China Visa Photo Requirements: Size, Background and Why Photos Get Rejected
Photo requirements for Chinese visa applications are set by the Consular Department of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and visa application service centres follow the same standard. A photo that does not comply is one of the most common reasons for an application to be returned, so it is worth checking the points below before you submit.
- Size and head proportions: the printed photo affixed to the form is 48mm by 33mm (33mm wide, 48mm high), with head width of 15mm to 22mm and head height from chin to crown of 28mm to 33mm, a 3mm to 5mm margin above the head, and at least 7mm from the chin to the bottom edge. Digital photos uploaded online should generally be no smaller than 354 by 472 pixels and no larger than 420 by 560 pixels.
- Background: white or close to white, with no border, and no everyday snapshot with scenery in the background.
- Glasses and headwear: thick-rimmed, tinted or reflective glasses are not allowed; hats and headscarves are generally discouraged, and where they are worn for religious reasons they must not obscure facial features.
- Whether editing is allowed: official rules require a clear portrait with complete facial features, natural skin tone, moderate brightness, no light bleed or shadows and no obvious distortion, with sufficient distance between the eyes. Replacing the background, heavy skin smoothing or reshaping the face makes the photo inconsistent with the applicant and risks rejection.
- Common reasons for rejection: photo taken more than six months ago, greyish background or shadows, head too small or too large in the frame, turned head or tilted chin (no more than 20 degrees left or right, no more than 25 degrees up or down), ears covered by hair, reflective glasses, creases or stains on the print, or printing on plain paper instead of glossy photo paper.
- Whether a selfie works: selfies are not specifically banned, but a phone selfie rarely satisfies the white background, straight-on angle, visible ears, shadow-free lighting, head proportions and glossy paper requirements at the same time, and is often returned in practice. A safer route is a photo studio using the 48mm by 33mm, white background, ears visible specification, asking for both the digital file and prints.
How many photos you need and how they are submitted also matters: an electronic photo is uploaded when completing the online form, and if the upload fails several times you can usually continue with the form; a printed photo must also be handed in when you submit documents at the visa application centre. The digital and printed versions should be the same photo so that they match at the counter.
Detailed practice can differ slightly between visa application centres, for example whether both shoulders must be visible or whether light makeup is accepted, so check the latest notice from the centre in your city before submitting. The photo is only one element: the signature on the form, passport validity, invitation letter and itinerary documents all affect the outcome, and the requirements published by the receiving office are authoritative.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
