China Visa Fee Reduction Extended to End-2026: Australian Missions' Notice
Chinese missions in Australia have announced that the reduced visa fee schedule for China-bound travellers will continue until 31 December 2026, covering the Chinese Embassy in Canberra and the consulates-general in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide. The notice lists fees separately for Australian citizens and for third-country nationals, all in Australian dollars. First, separate the visa fee from the total cost. The visa fee is a flat charge per application set by the mission; it usually does not include the visa application centre's service charge, any expedited-processing surcharge, or third-party costs such as photography, photocopying and courier delivery. When comparing ways of submitting, count these items separately — looking only at the visa fee understates the real outlay.
Second, work out which table applies to you. The notice prices applications separately for Australian citizens and for third-country nationals, and which office handles your case depends on where you live and how consular districts are drawn. Whether you may submit outside your district, and what extra explanation is needed, follows each office's own rules. If you hold a third-country passport and apply in Australia, the third-country national table applies.
Third, plan the timing. The reduction runs until 31 December 2026, meaning the fee schedule that applies to applications before that date. If you plan to travel around the end of the year, factor in Christmas and New Year closures at the embassy, consulates and visa application centres, and the queues for appointments in peak season, and allow a longer processing window than usual.
