English-Taught Programmes in China: How to Find Them

Many Chinese universities offer full degree programmes taught entirely in English at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level, and you do not need an HSK score to apply. However, whether a given major is taught in English varies greatly between universities, so knowing where to look matters more than sending applications blindly.

  • Common English-taught majors: business administration and international economics and trade, computer science and software engineering, electronics and electrical engineering, mechanical and civil engineering, environment and energy, international relations and Chinese studies, and public health. Some universities also run English-taught tracks in clinical medicine.
  • Types of universities offering them: mainly Double First-Class universities and some key provincial universities, with a higher concentration in coastal cities and provincial capitals. Within a single university, only some schools and some majors usually offer English-taught classes.
  • Language requirements: an IELTS or TOEFL score is normally required, or proof that your previous degree was taught in English. Some universities accept their own English test or an interview assessment. The exact score threshold and whether alternative proof is accepted depend on what the programme publishes that year.
  • Tuition differences: English-taught programmes usually cost more than Chinese-taught programmes at the same university, with medicine and business often higher. Scholarships can cover part or all of the tuition, but the number of places and selection criteria vary by institution.
  • English-taught versus Chinese-taught: English programmes are easier on the language threshold and allow coursework and a thesis in English, but daily life, internships and employment still require Chinese. Chinese-taught programmes are usually cheaper and offer more majors, but generally require an HSK score.
  • Where to search: the Study in China portal (campuschina.org) lists Chinese Government Scholarship programmes and institutions; the international student office website of each university publishes its English-taught programme list and application system; education sections of Chinese embassies and consulates also release admissions information.
  • Application timeline: most English-taught degree programmes open applications between late the previous year and spring, for an autumn start, and scholarship deadlines are usually earlier. Start preparing documents about a year ahead.
  • Degrees and recognition: before applying, confirm that the programme awards a degree and that the degree can be authenticated after graduation, since this directly affects employment and further study back home.

The most reliable way to tell whether a programme is genuinely taught in English is to read the curriculum and programme description rather than the marketing wording. A real English-taught programme lists the language of instruction for every course and allows a thesis in English; programmes that only provide language classes in the first year while teaching major courses in Chinese are usually Chinese-taught programmes with English support.

On documents, English-taught programmes generally ask for proof of a bachelor's degree and transcripts, an English test score, two recommendation letters, a personal statement and, for research degrees, a research proposal. Some business programmes also require work experience or GMAT/GRE. Materials not in English usually need translation, and some universities require notarisation.

One thing to think through in advance: English-taught classes solve the language of the classroom, not the language of daily life. Everyday situations in China, from hospitals and banks to police stations and letting agents, mostly run in Chinese. Adding basic Chinese to your plans alongside an English-taught programme markedly improves the experience.

Finally, admissions information for English-taught programmes should be taken from the university's international student office website, since third-party platforms can lag behind. Tuition, score thresholds and deadlines are adjusted every year, so check the current year's prospectus before applying.
