China Snow Town: Tickets, Transport and Best Season
China Snow Town sits at Shuangfeng Forest Farm in Changting Town, Hailin City, under Mudanjiang in Heilongjiang Province. Its long snow season and sticky snow build thick, rounded caps on the rooftops known as snow mushrooms, making it the country's most distinctive forest-village winter scene. It is not a city but a village and scenic area in a valley, and arranging transport and accommodation in advance changes the experience entirely.
- What it is: Snow Town, formerly Shuangfeng Forest Farm, lies near the junction of the Zhangguangcai and Laoye mountain ranges at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level. Snow starts accumulating in late October and lasts for months; because the snow is sticky, wind-blown snow settles on roofs, wooden fences and woodpiles in rounded caps, the snow mushrooms seen in most photographs. The core is the village along Xueyun Street, with viewing boardwalks and forest trails nearby.
- Getting there: the usual gateway is Harbin. A high-speed train from Harbin to Yabuli West Station takes about an hour, followed by roughly two hours by road to the scenic area. Harbin also has direct tourist coaches to Snow Town taking about five to six hours. From Mudanjiang city it is about 180 km, usually via Hailin or Changting Town. By car, take the Suifenhe-Manzhouli expressway and then the Yaxue highway; in winter snow tyres and chains are essential, and heavy snow can close mountain roads temporarily.
- Tickets and opening hours: pricing varies by season, roughly 140 yuan in peak season (about November to April) and about 70 yuan off peak, subject to official announcement. The scenic area opens for the winter, usually between December and March, with the exact dates adjusted each year. Shuttle buses, snow activities and the Dream Home area are charged separately.
- Best season: stable snow cover begins in mid to late December, when the snow mushrooms are best formed. January is the coldest, with daytime temperatures often between minus 15 and minus 25, and the cleanest scenery. Around Chinese New Year it is crowded and room rates peak. In March temperatures rise and the snow begins to melt, so crowds thin but the scenery fades.
- Payment and practical tips: book tickets and accommodation in advance through official channels or major travel platforms, as rooms are scarce in peak season. Mobile payment dominates inside the area and foreign cards may not work, so carry some cash. Down jackets, snow boots, knee pads and hand warmers can be rented locally. Phones lose charge quickly in the cold, so bring a power bank and keep it close to your body.
- Frequently asked by foreign visitors: do I need a Chinese ID card — a passport is enough for tickets and entry, and online bookings generally ask for the passport number; is there English service — main signs are in English but explanations and guesthouse communication are mostly in Chinese, so have a translation app ready; can I do a day trip — travel times are long, so an overnight stay is better; how cold is it — about minus 15 to minus 25 during the day, requiring a down jacket, snow boots, hat and gloves; are there discounts for children and seniors — usually by height and age, subject to the scenic area's notice.
Spending in Snow Town centres on accommodation, meals and snow activities, and the area is fairly commercialised. Confirming the price per dish before ordering, checking whether breakfast and heating are included in the room rate, and confirming the duration and equipment charges for snow activities prevents most disputes. Guesthouses inside the area mostly offer heated brick beds in small, lightly soundproofed rooms; if you want better comfort, stay outside the core area such as at Erlanghe and visit during the day.
On itinerary, most visitors link Snow Town with Harbin and Yabuli: Harbin for Central Street and the ice attractions, Yabuli for skiing, then the Yaxue highway into Snow Town for one night before heading back. This breaks up the longest drives and avoids travelling mountain roads after dark.
On gear, windproofing and keeping dry matter more than thickness. The outer down jacket should block wind, boots should have grippy soles with room for thick socks, and two pairs of gloves help (thin ones for photos, thick ones for warmth). Put cameras and phones in a sealed bag before moving from outdoors into a heated room to avoid condensation.
Ticket prices, opening dates and transport schedules at Snow Town are adjusted every year, so check the scenic area's official notices and the operator's published information before you travel.
