China Student Visa: X1 vs X2 Requirements
Which student visa you need depends on how long you will study: long-term study of more than 180 days requires an X1 visa, while short-term study of no more than 180 days requires an X2 visa. The documents, permitted stay and post-arrival procedures differ, and choosing the wrong one complicates your residence permit later.
- Which one applies: the X1 visa is issued to people going to China for long-term study of more than 180 days; the X2 visa is issued for short-term study of no more than 180 days.
- Key documents for X1: the original and a copy of the admission notice issued by the receiving institution in China, plus the original and a copy of the Foreign Student Visa Application Form (JW201 or JW202).
- Key documents for X2: the original or a copy of the admission notice issued by the receiving institution in China; if you hold a Short-Term International Student Information Form, submit it as well.
- JW201 versus JW202: both are study visa application forms issued to the receiving institution with the approval of the competent authorities and are normally sent to applicants by the school after admission. Which form is issued is decided by the school and the authorities, so simply follow the school's instructions.
- Difference in permitted stay: an X1 visa is only an entry document for long-term study, and the actual length of stay is set by the residence permit obtained after arrival. An X2 visa covers short-term study for no more than 180 days and generally does not require a residence permit; the stay period stated on the visa governs.
- Converting to a residence permit: holders of an X1 visa must, within 30 days of entry, apply for a residence permit at the exit-entry administration of the public security authority at or above the county level in the place where they intend to reside. Failing to do so means overstaying.
- Medical examination: a health certificate is normally required when applying for a residence permit, issued by an entry-exit inspection and quarantine body or a medical institution recognised by the accepting authority. Some applicants are asked to undergo a medical check in their home country first; the exact items and institutions depend on the accepting authority.
- Sequence of steps: obtain admission, let the school issue JW201/JW202, apply for the visa at the Chinese embassy, consulate or visa application centre with the admission notice and the form, enter China, and apply for the residence permit within 30 days.
The most common mistake is applying for X1 for a short course, or X2 for a full degree. The first adds an unnecessary residence permit procedure; the second can leave you unable to stay for the length of your programme and forced to leave and reapply. The only test is whether you plan to study in China for more than 180 days.
Language courses, summer programmes and one-semester exchanges usually fall under X2, while full bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes fall under X1. If your programme sits close to the boundary, confirm with the school's international student office which form they will issue before deciding on the visa type, because the form and the visa type must match.
Another step that is easy to overlook is the 30-day deadline after entry. It runs from the date of entry, not the date classes begin, and is not extended because registration has not yet taken place. A residence permit application requires a certificate of enrolment from the school, proof of accommodation registration and a health certificate, so start early to avoid repeated trips.
If you plan to extend your studies or move to a different level, consult the school and the local exit-entry administration before your current stay expires and follow the required procedure, rather than trying to fix an overstay afterwards.
