China Business Visa (M Visa): Requirements and Invitation Letter Rules
The M visa is issued to those who intend to go to China for commercial and trade activities. Applicants normally need to submit invitation documents issued by a trade partner in China, and the invitation must contain specified information.
- When it applies: the M visa is issued to those who intend to go to China for commercial and trade activities. Those going for exchanges, visits or study tours fall under the F visa, so the stated purpose of the visit differs between the two.
- Who issues the invitation: for the M visa, the invitation documents — such as documents on commercial activities or invitations to economic and trade fairs — must be issued by a trade partner in China, i.e. by the cooperating company in China.
- What the invitation must contain: (1) personal information of the invited person, such as name, gender and date of birth; (2) information about the visit, such as the reason for coming to China, dates of arrival and departure, place of visit, relationship with the inviting entity or person and who will pay for the travel; (3) information of the inviting entity or person, such as the name of the inviting entity or the name of the inviting person, phone number, address, official seal of the entity and the signature of the legal representative or the inviting person.
- Company documents: the main supporting document is the commercial activity document or invitation to an economic and trade fair issued by the trade partner in China. Where necessary, consular officials may request other supporting documents or supplementary materials, or require the applicant to attend an interview.
- Difference from the tourist visa (L visa): the L visa is issued to those travelling to China for tourism and may be supported by itinerary materials such as round-trip flight and hotel bookings, or by an invitation letter issued by a Chinese entity or individual. The M visa concerns commercial and trade activities, the inviting party is a trade partner in China, and the emphasis of the documents differs.
- Duration of stay, validity and number of entries: the official visa instructions do not set fixed standards; consular officials decide these according to the applicant's specific circumstances.
- Whether it can be converted into a work visa: the M visa corresponds to commercial and trade activities and is not equivalent to a work permit. Those who intend to work in China should apply for the Z work visa in accordance with the rules and obtain the relevant work permit and work-type residence permit; the specific requirements are subject to the official rules of the exit-and-entry authorities.
Form of the invitation: the invitation may be a fax, a photocopy or a printout, but consular officials may require the applicant to provide the original. As for the basic application materials, applicants should follow the requirements of the Chinese embassy or consulate in their locality, complete the visa application form online and submit their passport and photograph, among other items. Specific requirements can be found in the "Visa Application Guide" section of the China Online Visa Application system or on the website of the local Chinese embassy or consulate.
Application tips: Chinese embassies and consulates in different countries or regions may differ in appointment arrangements, processing hours and fees. Applicants should refer to the announcements on the website of the Chinese embassy or consulate where they intend to submit the application and allow sufficient time to prepare the materials.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
