China Visa for UK Citizens: Visa-Free Rules and How to Apply
Holders of ordinary British passports can currently travel to China without a visa for business, tourism, family visits or transit of up to 30 days, under a policy that runs until 31 December 2026. Anyone outside those conditions, or planning a longer stay, still needs a visa before travelling. Here is where the visa-free allowance ends and how the application process works.
- Who can go visa-free: according to notices from China's embassy and consulates in the UK and the Chinese Visa Application Service Centers, from 00:00 Beijing time on 17 February 2026 to 24:00 on 31 December 2026, British nationals holding ordinary passports may enter China without a visa for business, tourism, family visits, exchange visits or transit of no more than 30 days. The 30-day period counts from the day after entry. Work, study and news reporting are not covered, and a visa must be obtained in advance for those purposes.
- Where to submit: Chinese visa applications in the UK now start online. You complete the form and upload documents on the visa centre website; once the online review passes and you receive the confirmation email, you attend the Chinese Visa Application Service Center in London, Manchester or Edinburgh in person with your original passport, the application receipt and your photograph. No appointment is needed at that stage, but you must attend within the deadline stated after approval; the centre advises submitting the online application at least 30 days before departure.
- Documents: typically an ordinary passport with enough validity and blank pages, the completed online application form, a compliant photo on a white background, return flight and hotel bookings, and a travel itinerary. Depending on the category you may also need an invitation letter from a business partner (M), proof of family relationship plus an invitation (Q), an admission notice with a JW201 or JW202 form (X), or a work permit notification (Z). The centre's category-specific checklist is the authoritative list.
- Fees: the visa fee is banded by number of entries and visa category and is published by the Chinese embassy and consulates in the UK. The application centre charges a separate service fee and offers optional premium services. All fees are paid in person at the centre; the official guidance states that applicants never need to pay any visa-related fee by phone or online in advance.
- Processing time: online review and in-person submission are counted separately. Standard applications generally take a few working days and express service is faster where you qualify, but volumes rise around summer, Christmas and the Spring Festival, which lengthens turnaround. Do not book flights on the shortest possible timeline; check the times published by the centre on the day you apply.
- Fingerprints: under a notice from the Chinese Embassy in the UK, from 17 December 2025 to 31 December 2026 fingerprinting is waived for all short-term visa applicants seeking a stay of 180 days or less. Categories that require a residence permit after entry, such as D, J1, Q1, S1, X1 and Z, are still fingerprinted. Applicants under 14, over 70, or unable to record prints on all ten fingers are also exempt. A fingerprint waiver does not remove the need to attend in person to submit documents.
A practical reminder: the validity period, number of entries and duration of stay on a visa are three different things. Validity decides when you may enter China, entries decide how many times you may enter, and duration of stay decides how long you may remain after each entry. Check all three before booking flights, and do not read "valid until the end of the year" as "you may stay until the end of the year".
If you entered visa-free and have a legitimate reason to remain longer, apply to the local public security exit-entry administration for a stay permit. If you intend to stay more than 30 days, obtain a visa matching your purpose before travelling rather than entering visa-free and improvising afterwards.
The visa-free arrangement for British nationals currently carries a fixed end date, and the centres' online workflow, fingerprint waivers and fee levels may change again. This article reflects the notices in force now; re-check the latest announcements from the Chinese Embassy in the UK and the visa application centres before you travel.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
