Beijing Airport to the City Centre: Express Train, Subway or Taxi
Beijing has two main international airports: Capital International Airport (PEK) and Daxing International Airport (PKX). Once you land, the main ways into the city are the airport express train, the subway, airport buses, taxis and ride-hailing cars. This guide covers the two airport lines, transfer stations, fares and first and last train times.
- First, know which airport you are arriving at: Capital International Airport (PEK) lies to the northeast of the city and is linked to Dongzhimen, Sanyuanqiao and Beixinqiao by the Capital Airport Express. Daxing International Airport (PKX) lies to the south and is linked to Caoqiao station by the Daxing Airport Express. Confirm which airport you land at before choosing transport. Airport bus services also cover the route towards the other airport; details are subject to what the airport publishes.
- Capital Airport Express basics: five stations — Beixinqiao, Dongzhimen, Sanyuanqiao, Terminal 3 and Terminal 2; a single journey costs CNY 25 per person; trains run about every 10 minutes, subject to what Beijing Capital Metro actually publishes.
- Capital Airport Express operating hours: Terminal 3, 6:22–22:52; Terminal 2, 6:36–23:10; Sanyuanqiao towards the airport 6:04–22:34 and towards Beixinqiao 6:55–23:28; Dongzhimen towards the airport 6:00–22:30 and towards Beixinqiao 7:01–23:34; Beixinqiao 5:56–22:26.
- Capital Airport Express transfers and boarding points: Sanyuanqiao connects with subway Lines 10 and 12; Dongzhimen connects with Lines 2 and 13; Beixinqiao connects with Line 5. Board at level B2 of the Terminal 2 car park or level 2 of the Terminal 3 car park.
- Daxing Airport Express basics: three stations — Daxing Airport, Daxing Xincheng and Caoqiao; Caoqiao connects with subway Lines 10 and 19; board on level B1 of the terminal's rail station concourse.
- Daxing Airport Express operating hours: Caoqiao to Daxing Airport 05:30–22:30; Daxing Airport to Caoqiao 06:00–23:00 Monday to Saturday and 06:00–23:30 on Sundays. Headways: no more than 9 minutes 20 seconds between 05:41 and 22:30, and 15 minutes between 22:30 and 23:00. Ticket sales and gate checks close five minutes before the last train, so arrive at the platform at least ten minutes before it departs.
- Daxing Airport Express fares and discounts: The official site lists a single business-class ticket (business carriage) at a flat CNY 50 for the full journey; the standard-carriage fare is subject to what Beijing Rail Transit Operations publishes. Passengers who buy tickets on China Southern, China Eastern, Air China, Xiamen Airlines and other carriers departing from or arriving at Daxing Airport may receive a discount of varying size on the airport express ticket; ask the airline's customer service or check its website or app for the rules, eligible cabin classes and validity period.
- Free travel: Children 1.3 metres or shorter ride the Daxing Airport Express free, accompanied by an adult who pays. Passengers who meet the free-travel conditions under national and Beijing regulations may exchange a welfare ticket at the station ticket office or tap a card to travel free (standard carriage only); one accompanying person may travel free with a blind passenger.
- Taxis and ride-hailing: Capital Airport has taxi ranks in the terminal arrivals areas — at Terminal 2 the pick-up point is the central lane outside gates 5 to 9 on level 1 of the Terminal 2 car park, and at Terminal 3 follow the terminal signs to the B1 taxi waiting area. Ride-hailing cars pick up at designated car park waiting areas: the southeast side of level 1 of car park 2 for Terminal 2, and zone H on level B2 of car park 3 for Terminal 3. Taxis charge according to local taxi tariff rules and may add an expressway toll; the meter and local rules are authoritative.
- Chartered cars: Capital Airport offers the "Yicheda" service with seven-seat or larger vehicles, operated as tourist vehicles rather than taxis. The indicative fare is CNY 130, which is a starting price covering the first 10 km, with CNY 7 per kilometre thereafter, excluding expressway tolls. It can be arranged at the taxi service information desk.
- Arriving at night: The last Capital Airport Express trains are at 22:52 from Terminal 3 and 23:10 from Terminal 2; the last Daxing Airport Express train is at 23:00 (23:30 on Sundays). Late at night the express train may have stopped running, so choose a taxi or ride-hailing car, or an airport bus night service (routes and times are subject to what the airport publishes that day). Capital Airport's service hotline is 010-96158 and the Daxing Airport Express passenger service line is 010-87837266.
- Comparing cost and time: The airport express has a fixed fare and is unaffected by traffic, making it a good choice if you have light luggage and your destination is near a transfer station (Dongzhimen, Sanyuanqiao, Beixinqiao or Caoqiao). Taxis and ride-hailing cars go door to door and suit travellers with large luggage or groups, but can take much longer in rush hour or in rain and snow. Airport buses usually cost less than a taxi and serve several transport hubs, so they work well if your destination happens to be on a bus route.
In terms of time, the Capital Airport Express usually reaches transfer stations such as Dongzhimen and Sanyuanqiao from Terminal 2 in a few tens of minutes and is unaffected by road congestion. From the Daxing Airport Express you transfer at Caoqiao to subway Lines 10 and 19 to join the city's metro network. Actual journey times vary with the train you catch and how long the transfers take on foot, so allow a buffer, especially if you have luggage or need to change lines more than once.
Bear in mind that both airport lines are rail services with relatively early last trains — 22:52 from Terminal 3 and 23:10 from Terminal 2 on the Capital Airport Express, and 23:00 on the Daxing Airport Express. If your flight lands late at night or in the early hours, check in advance whether your arrival time leaves you enough time to catch the last train, and if not, plan on a taxi, a ride-hailing car or an airport bus night service. All fares, operating hours and boarding points above are subject to what the airport and the rail operator publish officially and may change on public holidays or when services are adjusted at short notice.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
