Nonstop Flights from the US to China: Routes and Flight Times

Flying nonstop from the US to China saves more than ten hours of connections, but the number of city pairs served is still limited. Knowing which cities have nonstop service, which airlines fly them and how long the flight takes usually saves more money than starting with a fare search.

  • Main gateways in China: Beijing (Capital and Daxing), Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen and Chengdu, with Fuzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing and Qingdao served in some seasons.
  • Main gateways in the US: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York JFK, Detroit and Dallas, plus Chicago, Washington Dulles and Boston.
  • Airlines: Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, XiamenAir, Sichuan Airlines and Hainan Airlines on the Chinese side; United, Delta and American on the US side. Most city pairs have only one or two carriers.
  • Flight time: roughly 11 to 13 hours to the West Coast and 14 to 16 hours to the East Coast. Eastbound flights are faster with tailwinds; the return leg takes longer, depending on routing, season and aircraft.
  • Frequency: schedules follow the aviation season. Major city pairs usually operate daily, others several times a week, and increases or cuts are announced at season changes. Check the airline's current timetable before booking.
  • Connections compared: routing via Seoul, Tokyo or Hong Kong, China is often cheaper, but adds a landing, may require collecting and re-checking bags, and needs a transit visa check.
  • Peak and off-peak fares: summer (June to August) and the weeks around Chinese New Year are the most expensive; September to November and deep winter are cheaper. Booking one to three months ahead widens both seat and date choices.

Nonstop capacity between the US and China has not returned to pre-pandemic levels, which means a given US city may be served by only one Chinese carrier, or connected to only one Chinese gateway. If your destination is not on the nonstop map, the practical options are to fly into Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou and connect domestically, or to route through a third country.

When comparing connections, work out three things: whether bags can be checked through to the final destination, whether the transit point requires a transit visa, and whether a later flight exists if you misconnect. A fare that is a few hundred dollars cheaper can cost five or six extra hours, or an overnight, which is rarely worth it with children or elderly travellers.

When booking, make sure the name matches your passport exactly, and try to keep the international and domestic legs on one ticket so the international baggage allowance applies. On separate tickets you may have to reclaim and re-check your bags, and go through security again.

The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
