Nanjing University: Confucius China Studies Program Scholarships
Confucius China Studies Program (CCSP) scholarships are open to non-Chinese citizens and support foreign doctoral students who come to China for study, joint research, dissertation writing or a full doctoral degree at a Chinese university. The programme description published by Nanjing University's Institute for International Students sets out the eligibility, documents, funding and timeline for the two doctoral tracks.
- Programme tracks: The joint doctoral training track supports outstanding doctoral students enrolled at foreign universities who come to China for study, joint research and dissertation writing, normally for one semester to two academic years. The doctoral degree track supports outstanding foreign master's graduates pursuing a doctoral degree at a Chinese university, normally for three to four years.
- Eligibility: Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens. The joint training track requires applicants to be formally enrolled doctoral students at a recognised foreign university, with Chinese proficiency at HSK Level 3 or above. The doctoral degree track requires a master's degree or final-year master's status, with Chinese proficiency at HSK Level 5 or above. Where other conditions are equal, applicants with stronger Chinese are preferred.
- Documents: For the joint training track: proof of doctoral enrolment, two recommendation letters from experts in the field, an HSK score report, the master's thesis abstract or other research output, the doctoral dissertation abstract, and a research plan for the stay in China. For the doctoral degree track: notarised undergraduate and master's transcripts and degree certificates (final-year master's students provide a certificate from their university) with Chinese translations, two recommendation letters from experts in the field, an HSK score report, the master's thesis abstract and other research output, and a doctoral research plan.
- How to apply: Complete the online application at csp.chinese.cn/myDoip and post the original application form and all other required documents (in Chinese and English) as instructed.
- Funding: Both tracks cover tuition, a living allowance and a research allowance, one round-trip international air ticket per year (economy class, reimbursed on actual cost), medical and accident insurance in China, and group activities and cultural experiences. The joint training track also covers one round-trip international air ticket for the foreign supervisor.
- Review and timeline: Applications are reviewed by the host university and the CCSP expert committee, followed by an interview. Expert correspondence review takes place each March, interviews follow within one month, and final results are announced within one month of the interviews. The joint training track normally starts in September or March; the doctoral degree track normally starts in September.
- Participating universities: According to the programme's official description, 18 Chinese universities currently take part, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing Language and Culture University, East China Normal University, Jilin University, Nankai University, Xiamen University, Shandong University, Shanghai International Studies University, Sichuan University, Wuhan University and Sun Yat-sen University. The final list is the one published in the application system.
The programme description also notes that each applicant submits one application form and may list two preferred universities, with first choices given priority. Applicants are advised to contact their intended Chinese supervisor in advance, since whether the supervisor's research direction matches the study plan is a key factor in a successful application.
The FAQ section notes that the programme supports full-time study in China only, and that successful candidates may not take employment, run a business or engage in other commercial activities during their studies. Applicants with questions during the application process can contact the responsible officers at the Center for Language Education and Cooperation by email, stating their name and application number.
