Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC): Eligibility, Documents and Deadlines
The Chinese Government Scholarship is open to non-Chinese citizens and is normally applied for through a receiving agency, such as a Chinese embassy or consulate or a Chinese university. This guide summarises what the scholarship covers, who can apply, what documents are needed and when to apply.
- What it covers: the Chinese Government Scholarship generally includes tuition, accommodation, a living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance. The exact standards follow official announcements and the admission notice of the host university.
- How to apply: applicants must apply to the relevant receiving agency, such as a Chinese embassy or consulate or a Chinese university. The Study in China website (www.campuschina.org) provides introductions to the scholarship programmes, application procedures and Chinese universities.
- Age and academic requirements: bachelor's applicants should have senior high school graduation or equivalent and are generally no older than 25; master's applicants should hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent and are generally no older than 35; doctoral applicants should hold a master's degree or equivalent and are generally no older than 40. General scholars are generally no older than 45 and senior scholars no older than 50.
- Language requirements: for programmes taught in Chinese, bachelor's applicants, general scholars (except Chinese language majors) and senior scholars should generally reach at least HSK Level 3, while master's and doctoral applicants should generally reach at least HSK Level 4. For programmes taught in a foreign language, provide IELTS, TOEFL or other language proof as required by the university.
- Bachelor's admission test: applicants for a bachelor's degree must take the China Scholastic Competence Assessment (CSCA) for undergraduate admission and obtain a valid score report before the application deadline.
- Document checklist: the Chinese Government Scholarship application form, the passport information page, a notarised highest diploma, academic transcripts, language proficiency proof, the CSCA score report (bachelor's), pre-admission documents, a study or research plan, recommendation letters (master's, doctoral and senior scholars), a portfolio (arts and design), legal documents for a guardian in China if under 18, the Foreigner Physical Examination Form (for study longer than six months), and a certificate of no criminal record.
- When to apply: online applications are generally made between the end of the year before enrolment and early the following year, and deadlines differ between receiving agencies. For example, the notice published by the Chinese Embassy in Poland for the 2026/2027 academic year set an online application deadline of 16 February 2026. Applications submitted late or incomplete are treated as withdrawn.
- Interviews and results: some receiving agencies arrange video interviews. The notice from the Chinese Embassy in Poland, for instance, required interview invitations to be sent by 18 February, confirmation of attendance by 20 February and interviews to be organised by 25 February. Admission results are notified by the receiving agency and the admitting university; official notices are authoritative.
Selection for the Chinese Government Scholarship is organised annually by receiving agencies, and the eligibility criteria, documents and schedule follow the official notice for that year. Prepare the notarised and translated versions of your diploma and transcripts early, and allow time to obtain the physical examination form and the certificate of no criminal record.
The Study in China website (www.campuschina.org) is the official channel for information on the scholarship programmes, the application process and Chinese universities. Check the programme introductions and application methods there before you apply.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
