How Much Does It Cost to Study in China?

The cost of a year of study in China comes mainly from tuition, accommodation, living expenses and other fees, and the exact amount depends on the school, the programme and the city. National rules set fee ranges, and each institution sets its own level within them.

  • Tuition ranges: under the 1998 notice on self-funded international student fees (Jiaowailai [1998] No. 7), liberal-arts tuition is RMB 14,000-26,000 per year for undergraduates, 18,000-30,000 for master's and 22,000-34,000 for doctoral students. Science and engineering add 10%-30% to those figures, while medicine, arts and sports add 50%-100%.
  • Short courses and visiting students: the same standard sets about RMB 3,000-4,800 for a one-month short course and 8,000-10,000 for a three-month course; junior college and general visiting students follow the undergraduate rate, and senior visiting students follow the master's rate.
  • Accommodation: for a standard twin room without a private bathroom, phone or TV, the rate is about RMB 12-32 per bed per day; better-equipped rooms may cost more, but no more than 2.5 times that standard. Off-campus rent is priced separately by city.
  • Living costs: food, local transport and daily spending vary by city. First-tier cities such as Beijing and Shanghai are clearly more expensive than smaller ones, and personal habits matter a lot, so budget with some flexibility.
  • Insurance and other fees: international students generally need comprehensive medical insurance; other costs include an application fee (RMB 400-800 under the standard), textbooks and a medical examination.
  • What scholarships cover: the Chinese Government Scholarship is usually a full award covering tuition, accommodation, a living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance, which greatly reduces out-of-pocket costs. Other options include the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship and local-government and university scholarships.
  • Ways to save: applying for scholarships, choosing institutions in second- and third-tier cities, living in on-campus dormitories and using student discounts are common ways to lower the cost of studying in China.

Important note: the national fee standard above dates from 1998, and some institutions have adjusted their charges since then, so the figures are for reference only. For the final tuition and accommodation costs, check the target university's international admissions page, your offer letter, or the institution's finance office.

The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
