Yuelu Mountain rises beside the river and contains historic sites such as Yuelu Academy, the Aiwan Pavilion and Lushan Temple; Yuelu Academy is a thousand-year-old seat of learning founded in the Northern Song period and is connected to Hunan University. Orange Isle is a long, narrow island in the Xiang River whose southern tip carries the sculpture of Mao Zedong as a young man, a landmark of Changsha.

From Changsha Huanghua International Airport, take the rail link into the city and then change to the metro for the scenic area.
- Tickets and opening hours: Both Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle are free to enter, but visitors must book in advance through the official Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle Tourism Area WeChat account, normally up to three days ahead, and the two areas admit visitors in timed slots. From May to October it opens from 07:50 to 17:30, and from November to April from 07:50 to 17:00. A real-name booking is required. Check the latest official announcements for details.
- Best season: Yuelu Mountain is known for its autumn foliage, and the Aiwan Pavilion takes its name from a line of classical poetry about lingering to enjoy the maple woods at dusk. September to November is generally cool with the best autumn colour, while March to May brings spring flowers and fresh greenery. Summers are hot and rainy and winters are damp and cold, so check the weather forecast before setting out.
- Payment and practical tips: Entry is free but requires a booking; show the booking QR code or have your document checked as the system instructs. The sightseeing buses and cable car inside the area are paid separately: the Yuelu Mountain sightseeing bus can be bought in the same mini-programme used for booking, the Orange Isle sightseeing bus through the Longxiang Orange Isle mini-programme, and the cable car at the east gate of Yuelu Mountain costs about 50 yuan per person uphill and 40 yuan downhill, subject to the price posted on site. Spending in the area is in renminbi, so carry a little cash and confirm in advance which mobile payment methods work.
- Frequently asked questions: 1. Do I need a Chinese ID card, or can I use my passport? The booking system accepts documents other than Chinese ID cards, and international visitors can select the matching document type and enter their details; Yuelu Academy's official ticket notice states that non-mainland visitors may book with a passport and similar documents. Bring the original valid document matching your booking. 2. How far ahead should I book? The official channel normally allows bookings three days ahead, and Yuelu Academy four days ahead including the day itself; slots fill quickly around public holidays, so book early. 3. Do I need separate bookings for Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle? Yes, they are booked and entered separately, so book each for your intended arrival time. 4. Is there an English guide? Public guide information is mainly in Chinese; ask the scenic area in advance whether English-language guiding is available. 5. Do I have to take the sightseeing bus? Orange Isle is a long, narrow island and walking takes considerable time, so take the bus if your time is limited; on Yuelu Mountain you can walk or take the sightseeing bus or cable car.
Suggested order of visit: enter Yuelu Mountain through the south gate at Hunan University station on Metro Line 4, visit Yuelu Academy first, then walk up the mountain path to sights such as the Aiwan Pavilion, afterwards take the metro or a taxi to Orange Isle, and finish in the late afternoon at the southern tip for views of the Xiang River and both banks. Both areas use timed bookings, so enter within your booked slot; if you miss it you must book again. If you need to cancel, do so at least two hours in advance.
Other notes: both Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle are outdoor areas with a fair amount of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, rain gear and drinking water. They are busy around public holidays, and the official advice is to book through proper channels rather than buying from touts. Prices, opening hours and booking rules may change, so before travelling check the scenic area's official WeChat account and the official Yuelu Academy website.
