Pudacuo National Park in Shangri-La: Tickets, Transport and Opening Hours

Pudacuo National Park lies in Shangri-La in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, on the south-eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and in the heart of the "Three Parallel Rivers" World Natural Heritage area. It is made up of the Bitahai Nature Reserve, an internationally important wetland, and the Shudu Lake scenic area in the Haba section. It is 22 kilometres from Shangri-La city centre, covers about 602.1 square kilometres, and its altitude ranges from 2,347 metres to 4,670 metres. Its main sights include Shudu Lake, Bitahai Lake (some areas are temporarily closed), Tianbaotai, Mililang and Gangchaba.

  • What it is: Pudacuo was among the first national parks established in mainland China, combining geological landforms, lakes and wetlands, forests and meadows, and river valleys, with a well-preserved original ecosystem. Bitahai Lake sits at 3,538 metres and its Tibetan name means "a place carpeted with oak". Shudu Lake has a surface elevation of 3,595 metres, stretches 2.8 kilometres east to west and 0.7 kilometres north to south, and covers 120 hectares. Mililang is a subalpine meadow at 3,700 metres, and Gangchaba is a summer pasture at 3,600 metres with a meadow 2 kilometres long and 0.4 kilometres wide.
  • Getting there: From Shangri-La city centre, driving or a chartered car covers about 22 kilometres in 30 to 40 minutes; a taxi costs roughly 100 to 150 yuan one way. A shuttle bus runs from Shangri-La bus station to Pudacuo for about 30 yuan per person one way, normally departing between 08:00 and 09:00, with return buses usually leaving the park between 15:00 and 16:00; schedules vary by season, so confirm in advance. From Lijiang or Dali, travel first to Shangri-La and change there: Lijiang to Shangri-La takes about four hours by coach at roughly 80 to 100 yuan, and Dali to Shangri-La about six to seven hours at roughly 120 to 150 yuan. Local travel agencies also run day trips that include tickets, transport and a guide.
  • Tickets and opening hours: The ticket is 138 yuan per person, comprising a 68 yuan admission fee and a 70 yuan sightseeing bus fee. The booking hotline is 0887-8232533 and online booking is available on the official website. The park is open all year, opening at 08:00 and closing at 16:30; hours change with the high and low seasons and may be extended or shortened around public holidays, so check the official announcements before travelling. The official booking page accepts real-name bookings with a passport and other identity documents, and everyone in one booking must enter the park together.
  • Best season: The park sits at high altitude and the climate varies markedly through the year. May to October is generally milder, with good meadow and lake scenery; May and June bring alpine flowers and September and October offer the best autumn colours. From November to April temperatures are lower and snow and ice are possible. Mountain weather changes quickly and the temperature range within a day is wide, so bring a warm jacket, sun protection and rain gear, and check official announcements and the weather forecast before setting out.
  • Payment and practical tips: The park is large and visitors normally use the sightseeing bus between sights; the bus fee is included in the 138 yuan ticket. Spending in the park is in renminbi, so carry a small amount of cash and confirm in advance which mobile payment methods work. Food outlets inside the park are limited, so bring water and snacks. Because the park ranges from 2,347 to 4,670 metres above sea level, walk at a relaxed pace, avoid strenuous exertion and prepare according to your own condition. The park's official visitor notice warns that some guides may try to persuade visitors to cancel their Pudacuo trip by claiming altitude sickness, exhaustion or landslides; visitors can assert their rights under China's Tourism Law.

Frequently asked questions from international visitors. 1. Do I need a Chinese ID card, or can I use my passport? The document types accepted on the official booking page include passport and Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, so a passport can be used for a real-name booking; bring the original document matching the booking when you enter. 2. Do I need to book in advance? Online booking on the official website and the booking hotline 0887-8232533 are both available, and booking ahead is advisable in high season. 3. Do I have to take the sightseeing bus? The park is large and the bus is normally used between sights; the fee is already included in the 138 yuan ticket. 4. Is there an English guide? Public guide information is mainly in Chinese, so ask the booking hotline in advance whether English-language guiding is available. 5. Will the altitude be a problem? The park ranges from 2,347 to 4,670 metres, so walk at a relaxed pace, avoid strenuous exertion and prepare according to your own condition.

Visitors coming from Shangri-La city centre are advised to enter in the morning, allow half a day to a full day for Shudu Lake and the Mililang area, and confirm the return transport time in advance, as it is difficult to find a taxi at short notice at the park entrance.
