Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing: A Practical Visitor Guide

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum stands on the southern slope of Maofeng Peak in the Zhongshan (Purple Mountain) area of Nanjing. The main structures were completed in the spring of 1929, and the interment ceremony was held on 1 June that year. The buildings are laid out on a central axis: from the memorial archway and the processional way through the tomb gate and the stele pavilion to the memorial hall and the tomb chamber, the distance is 700 metres with a rise of 70 metres, and there are 392 stone steps and 10 terraces. Entry to the mausoleum is free, but visits require a real-name reservation and a strict no-noise policy applies.

  • What it is: the mausoleum of Dr Sun Yat-sen. Construction began in January 1926, the main structures were completed in the spring of 1929 and the whole project finished by the end of 1931. It covers two thousand mu, is built up the mountainside, and is laid out in the shape of a “freedom bell”. The mausoleum is listed among China's first group of major historical and cultural sites protected at national level and among the first “Chinese architectural heritage of the 20th century”. Nearby commemorative structures include the Music Stage, Xingjian Pavilion, Guanghua Pavilion, Liuhui Waterside Pavilion and the Sutra Library.
  • Getting there: take Nanjing Metro Line 2 and get off at Muxuyuan or Xiaolingwei station, then transfer to the scenic-area shuttle bus for the mausoleum. If you get off at Xiamafang station, walk to Bo'ai Road to transfer to bus No. 34 or the shuttle bus, or follow the walking path into the area. For the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, get off at Muxuyuan station and transfer to the shuttle bus or walk. For the Linggu Scenic Area, get off at Zhonglingjie station and walk to Linggu Temple Road to transfer to bus No. 202 or walk along Linggu Temple Road.
  • Tickets and opening hours: the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum itself is free. Since 1 January 2019 a reservation system and a strict no-noise policy have applied to Bo'ai Square and the core area above the “Great Harmony” tomb gate — the gate, the stele pavilion, the memorial hall and the tomb chamber. That area is open daily from 8:30 to 17:00 and closes for maintenance every Monday, except on public holidays and the anniversaries of Dr Sun Yat-sen's birth and death. The tomb chamber is open Tuesday to Friday, excluding public holidays, and on the anniversaries of Dr Sun's birth and death. Reservations can be made on the official website www.zschina.org.cn (7:00–22:00), the “Zhongshan Scenic Area” WeChat account (7:00–22:00) and self-service visitor terminals (8:00–17:00). Other sites in the area are ticketed separately: Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum 70 yuan per person, Linggu Scenic Area 35 yuan, Music Stage 10 yuan, Meiling Palace 30 yuan, or 100 yuan for a combined ticket covering all four.
  • Ticket office hours for the other sites: Ming Xiaoling, Linggu and the Music Stage are open 6:30–18:30 from February to November and 7:00–17:30 from December to January; Meiling Palace is open 7:30–17:30 with ticket sales ending at 17:00. The Ming Xiaoling Museum and the Dr Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall are open 9:00–17:00 with last admission at 16:30, and close all day on Mondays except on national public holidays.
  • Best season: spring and autumn are relatively mild and the most comfortable times to climb the mausoleum and walk in the Zhongshan area. Nanjing summers are hot and wet, and the climb from Bo'ai Square to the memorial hall means 392 stone steps in a row with limited shade, so midday visits are physically demanding; winters on the mountain are windy and cold. Check the day's weather and the scenic area's notices before setting out, as opening arrangements may be adjusted temporarily in bad weather or when visitor numbers are controlled.
  • Payment and practical tips: the mausoleum is free with a reservation, while Ming Xiaoling, Linggu, the Music Stage and Meiling Palace require tickets, bought and reserved through the “Zhongshan Scenic Area” ticketing and mausoleum reservation mini program. If you have trouble using the online channels, go to the Zhongshan Scenic Area Visitor Centre at the entrance to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum commercial street (tel. 025-85769047), which provides reservation assistance, guide services and information, and where you can pick up a scenic-area map. Since 1 October 2025 the area has applied a quota system for vehicle parking: medium, small and mini passenger cars may reserve one day in advance through the scenic area's WeChat subscription account (Nanjing Zhongshan Scenic Area), service account (Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Ticket Centre) or mini program (Zhongshan Scenic Area), then enter by the designated route with the permit and park in the designated car park; each vehicle may reserve twice per calendar month. Spending inside the area is in yuan, so carry a little cash and confirm in advance which mobile payment methods work for you.
  • Telephone numbers: information 025-84433582; reservations 4009288312; tickets 025-84437786.

FAQ 1 — Do I need a Chinese ID card? The mausoleum uses a real-name free reservation system, and a valid identity document is generally needed for the reservation and for verification on site. International visitors should carry their passport; the exact document requirements are set out on the official reservation channels' own pages.

FAQ 2 — Can I reserve online with a passport? The official reservation channels are the website, the “Zhongshan Scenic Area” WeChat account and self-service visitor terminals, and the specific identity verification requirements of each channel are stated on that channel's pages. If you run into trouble online, call the reservation line on 4009288312 or ask staff at the Zhongshan Scenic Area Visitor Centre for help.

FAQ 3 — Is there an English guide? The visitor centre provides guide services and scenic-area maps for visitors to take away. For the exact English-language guiding arrangements, ask at the visitor centre or call 025-85769047.

FAQ 4 — Can I visit on a Monday? The core area above the “Great Harmony” tomb gate closes for maintenance every Monday, except on public holidays and the anniversaries of Dr Sun Yat-sen's birth and death. If your trip falls on a Monday, consider visiting the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, the Music Stage, Meiling Palace or the Linggu Scenic Area instead, and note that indoor venues such as the Ming Xiaoling Museum and the Dr Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall also close on Mondays other than on national public holidays.

FAQ 5 — Do I need to buy a ticket? The mausoleum itself is free and only needs a reservation. The Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum costs 70 yuan per person, the Linggu Scenic Area 35 yuan, the Music Stage 10 yuan and Meiling Palace 30 yuan, or 100 yuan for a combined ticket covering all four. These prices come from official scenic-area information; the latest official figures prevail.

Visitor notice: a strict no-noise policy applies throughout the mausoleum area — please keep your voice down and do not use amplification equipment.
