Mount Tai: Tickets, Transport and the Best Season to Visit

Mount Tai, in Tai'an, Shandong Province, is the foremost of China's Five Great Mountains and a mixed World Cultural and Natural Heritage site. Hiking up at night to watch the sunrise is a classic experience. This guide is written for foreign visitors preparing to travel to China, covering how to get there, what it costs and what to watch out for.

  • What it is: Mount Tai is located in Tai'an, Shandong Province. Known in ancient times as "Daizong", it ranks first among China's Five Great Mountains and was inscribed in 1987 as a mixed World Cultural and Natural Heritage site. Its highest point is the Jade Emperor Peak, making it a major destination for sunrise views and historical exploration.
  • Getting there: take the high-speed train to Tai'an Station (on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line), then transfer by bus or taxi to one of the entrances. Mount Tai has three main entrances: Hongmen, Tianwaicun and Taohuayu. The Hongmen and Tianwaicun routes are open 24 hours, while the Taohuayu route is open from 7:00 to 17:00. Visitors who plan to walk to Zhongtianmen should use the Hongmen walking route.
  • Tickets and opening hours: the ticket is government-priced at RMB 115 per person, valid for three days with unlimited visits within that period, and also covers Dai Temple (Dai Temple ticket: RMB 20 per person, RMB 10 for students). Minors aged 6 to 18 and full-time undergraduate students and below pay RMB 57; teachers, model workers at or above provincial and ministerial level and heroes pay RMB 100. Free admission applies to, among others, active-duty military personnel, retired military cadres and retired non-commissioned officers, people with disabilities, seniors aged 60 and above, journalists, and children aged 6 and under or 1.4 metres and under in height.
  • Cable cars and shuttle buses: the Zhongtianmen and Taohuayuan cable cars cost RMB 100 per person one way, and the Houshiwu cable car costs RMB 20 one way. Shuttle buses from Tianwaicun to Zhongtianmen and from Taohuayu to Taohuayuan cost RMB 30 per person each way; the bus from Tai'an high-speed rail station to Zhongtianmen costs RMB 35, and from the ecological car park east of the Tai'an municipal government to Zhongtianmen costs RMB 32. Seniors aged 60 and above enjoy a 50% discount on these shuttle buses and cable cars; children other than infants must buy an adult ticket once they reach 1.2 metres in height.
  • Best season: Mount Tai has four distinct seasons, and April to October is relatively mild — the main period for hiking and watching the sunrise. Summers bring frequent thunderstorms in the mountains, while winters are cold at the summit; the Houshiwu cable car does not operate from November 1 to March 31 during the winter fire-prevention period. Check the weather forecast before travelling, as cable cars may be suspended temporarily in strong winds, thunderstorms or during maintenance.
  • Payment and practical tips: tickets, cable cars and shuttle buses can be booked in advance through the official "Mount Tai Scenic Area" channels. Foreign visitors can download Alipay and WeChat in advance and link an overseas card, or carry a small amount of cash. Temperatures at the summit are low at night, so night hikers should bring enough warm clothing and a light source. A cable car ride takes about 8 to 15 minutes one way.
  • Frequently asked questions from foreign visitors: Can I use my passport? Ticket purchase and inspection generally accept valid ID such as a passport, subject to the requirements of the official channels. Do I need to book in advance? Mount Tai uses real-name reservation ticketing, so booking ahead through official channels is recommended; whether tickets are sold on site is subject to the scenic area's announcements. Is there English guidance? Signage and guides provide Chinese and English information, subject to what is on site. Are there discounts? Eligible students, seniors and children can enjoy discounts or free admission under the rules, and should carry valid ID.

About the night hike and sunrise: many visitors choose to walk up from Hongmen at night and reach the summit in the early hours to watch the sunrise. Lighting on the mountain paths at night is limited, so it is advisable to walk with others, stay warm and watch your footing, and allow plenty of time for the climb. Cable cars, shuttle buses and some sections of the route may be suspended temporarily in bad weather or during maintenance, so please refer to the scenic area's announcements on the day.

Prices and opening hours may change: the ticket, cable car and shuttle bus information above is compiled from the service guide of the Mount Tai Scenic Area Administrative Committee and the pricing document of the Shandong Provincial Development and Reform Commission; the ticket is government-priced and has a validity period. Actual prices, eligible discount groups and opening hours are subject to the scenic area's latest announcements, so it is best to confirm again through official channels before setting out.
