Yu Garden and City God Temple, Shanghai: Tickets, Transport and the Best Season
Yu Garden is a well-preserved Ming-dynasty classical garden in Shanghai's old town, adjoining the City God Temple, the Zigzag Bridge and the Yuyuan Bazaar. This guide is written for foreign visitors preparing to travel to China: how to get there, what tickets cost, the best time to visit, and what to keep in mind on site.
- What it is: Yu Garden is located in Huangpu District, Shanghai. It is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level and a 4A-rated tourist attraction, first built in 1559 (the 38th year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming dynasty) by Pan Yunduan, a former provincial administration commissioner of Sichuan. The character "Yu" conveys peace and contentment, and the garden has long been known as the finest in south-eastern China. It adjoins the Yuyuan Bazaar and the City God Temple — a Taoist temple at 249 Fangbang Middle Road protected as a municipal-level heritage site — and together with the Zigzag Bridge they form the most concentrated sightseeing area in Shanghai's old town.
- Getting there: the metro is the easiest option. Take Shanghai Metro Line 10 or Line 14 to Yuyuan Garden Station and walk to Yuyuan Old Street and the City God Temple area. From Hongqiao Airport or Hongqiao Railway Station, take Metro Line 2 to East Nanjing Road and change to Line 10; from Pudong Airport, take Metro Line 2 to East Nanjing Road and change to Line 10. Taxis and ride-hailing services are also available; journey times and fares depend on traffic and the meter.
- Tickets and opening hours: Yu Garden charges different prices by season. In high season (April 1 to June 30 and September 1 to November 30) the adult ticket is RMB 40; in low season (July 1 to August 31 and December 1 to March 31) it is RMB 30. Opening hours are 9:00–16:30 (last entry 16:00, closing 16:30), and the garden is closed every Monday except on national statutory holidays; during the Spring Festival, opening hours follow the official announcement. The City God Temple is open all year round: from May 1 to September 30 the hours are 9:00–17:00, and from October 1 to April 30 they are 8:30–16:30, opening from 6:00 on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month. No advance booking is required for the temple.
- Discounts and free admission: Yu Garden's student ticket covers minors over 6 and up to 18 years old, and full-time students at undergraduate level or below, at half price on presentation of a valid ID card, student card or similar. Visitors aged 60 and above also pay half price on presentation of a valid ID card, and each person may buy only one discounted ticket per day. Children 1.3 metres or under in height, or 6 years old or under, are admitted free (accompanied by an adult, with a limit of three children per adult). Free admission is also granted, after registration and verification of valid documents, to people with disabilities, active-duty military personnel, military personnel with disabilities, family members of martyrs, of those who died in the line of duty and of those who died of illness, family members of active-duty military personnel, fire and rescue personnel (including cadets of fire and rescue academies) and serving police officers.
- Best season: Yu Garden's high-season pricing falls in spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November), when temperatures are pleasant and the garden's planting looks its best — these are the recommended times to visit. Summers (July and August) in Shanghai are hot and rainy, while winters (December to February) are damp and cold. The City God Temple and Yuyuan Bazaar area is busiest around the Spring Festival; specific events and opening arrangements follow official announcements. When planning, try to avoid Mondays, when Yu Garden is closed.
- Payment and practical tips: tickets can be bought online or in person — online through the official "Shanghai Yu Garden" mini programme, and in person at ticket windows at both the north and south gates. Shops in the Yuyuan Bazaar and nearby generally accept mobile payment via Alipay and WeChat, which can be used once an overseas bank card is linked, and some merchants also accept overseas bank cards; it is worth carrying a small amount of cash as a backup. Paths inside the garden are uneven, with many steps, stone bridges, slopes, ponds and rockeries, and they become slippery in rain or snow. The garden does not currently offer luggage storage, so it is best to leave large bags at your hotel. Pets are not allowed inside, with the exception of guide dogs. The garden's enquiry number is 021-63260830.
- Frequently asked questions from foreign visitors: Do I need a Chinese ID — can I use my passport? Foreign visitors can enter with a passport; a valid document is required for discounted or free admission, so carry your passport. Do I need to book in advance? Yu Garden tickets can be bought through the official mini programme or at the north and south gate ticket windows, and whether advance booking is required is subject to the official channel; the City God Temple needs no booking and can be entered during opening hours. Can I visit on a Monday? Yu Garden is closed every Monday except on national statutory holidays, while the City God Temple is open all year round. Is there English guidance? Signage and explanations are mainly in Chinese, so it is worth preparing a translation app or an audio guide. What else is nearby? The Zigzag Bridge, the Yuyuan Bazaar (whose public areas are free to enter) and the City God Temple are all within walking distance, making a half-day or full-day itinerary.
Entrances: Yu Garden has two entrances. The north gate is at 168 Fuyou Road, Huangpu District, and is open to both groups and individual visitors; the south gate is at 279 Yuyuan Old Street, at the foot of the Zigzag Bridge, and is for individual visitors only. If you walk over from Yuyuan Garden metro station, you will reach the Zigzag Bridge and the Yuyuan Bazaar first; follow the signs on site to the north or south gate.
Prices and hours may change: the ticket, opening-hour and discount information above is compiled from the ticketing, opening-hours and ticket-price pages published on Yu Garden's official website and from the announcement by the Huangpu District People's Government of Shanghai on adjusted opening hours for the City God Temple; the temple's ticket price is subject to what is announced on site. Actual prices, eligible discount groups and opening hours are subject to the attraction's latest announcements, so it is best to confirm again through official channels before setting out.
