China Visa Photo Requirements: Size, Background and Common Rejections

A Chinese visa application requires a recent colour photo that meets the official specification. Size, head proportions, background and printing method are all regulated, and a photo that does not comply may cause the application to be refused. This guide explains the requirements.

  • Size and head proportions: The printed photo submitted with the application form must be 33 mm wide and 48 mm high. The head width must be between 15 mm and 22 mm, and the head height (from chin to top of head) between 28 mm and 33 mm.
  • When taken and posture: It must be a colour photo taken within the last 6 months. Face the camera directly with both eyes open, lips closed and ears visible; the expression should be neutral with no extra movement. Head position: no more than 20 degrees of left or right tilt and no more than 25 degrees of up or down tilt.
  • Background and paper: The background must be white or close to white, with no border. Everyday-life photos with scenery in the background are not accepted. The photo must be printed on glossy photo paper, not matte paper or plain paper, and must be free of stains, scratches or creases.
  • Glasses and headwear: Glasses are allowed, but thick-rimmed, tinted or glare glasses are not. Hats, headscarves and similar items are not recommended; if they must be worn for religious reasons, they must not obscure any facial features.
  • Image quality: There must be no light bleed or shadows; brightness should be moderate with natural skin tone, no red-eye and no obvious distortion. Facial features must be complete, clearly visible and centred.
  • Digital photo: The digital photo uploaded during the online application has separate pixel and file requirements, for example 354 to 420 pixels wide and 472 to 560 pixels high, JPEG compressed, generally between 40 KB and 120 KB. The online application system's instructions are authoritative.
  • Is retouching allowed: The official requirements call for complete, genuine and clearly visible facial features with no obvious distortion. Normal colour correction is fine, but do not over-retouch or alter facial features, or the photo may be rejected at the preliminary review or at the counter.
  • Can you use a selfie: Selfies are not explicitly prohibited, but they often suffer from perspective distortion, uneven lighting and unacceptable backgrounds, and usually fail to meet the specification. Having the photo taken at a professional studio is recommended.
  • Common reasons for rejection: incorrect size or head proportions; a background with scenery or a border; thick-rimmed or tinted glasses; a photo older than 6 months; shadows on the face or red-eye; printing on matte or plain paper; creases or stains on the photo.

These specifications come from the visa photo requirements of the Consular Department of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and are published by Chinese embassies and consulates and by the Chinese Visa Application Service Centres. The online application system also sets pixel and file-size requirements for the digital photo, and both sets must be met.

If your digital photo fails the online preliminary review, you can normally upload a replacement. When you submit documents in person at a visa application service centre, if the system flags the digital photo as non-compliant, you will usually need to bring a compliant printed photo as a backup. If the submitted photo does not meet the requirements, the visa application may be refused.

The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
