China Tourist Visa (L Visa): Requirements and Document Checklist
The Chinese tourist visa (L visa) is issued to people travelling to China for tourism. Applicants need both the basic documents — passport, application form and photo — and either travel itinerary documents or an invitation letter. This guide explains the requirements and document checklist.
- Who it is for: The L visa is issued to people travelling to China for tourism. If you plan to go to China for business and trade, exchanges and visits, work or study, you should apply for the corresponding visa category (such as M, F, Z or X) rather than an L visa.
- First check whether you need a visa at all: China operates a unilateral visa-free policy for citizens of certain countries, and also has visa-free transit arrangements. Before travelling, check the National Immigration Administration's list of countries covered by unilateral visa exemption and its visa-free transit policies to see whether you qualify; if you do, no L visa is needed.
- Basic document 1 — passport: Submit the original passport and a copy of the information page. A valid passport is generally required to have at least 6 months' remaining validity and two consecutive blank visa pages, and its validity must extend beyond the visa's validity and the permitted duration of stay. The exact requirement is set by the Chinese embassy or consulate or the visa application service centre in your country.
- Basic document 2 — application form and photo: Complete the Visa Application Form of the People's Republic of China online, print and sign it, and submit one compliant passport photo measuring 48 mm by 33 mm, recent, front-facing, in colour, on a white background and without headwear. Applicants under 18 must also submit documents proving the parent-child relationship, copies of the parents' passports or ID cards, and a letter of consent signed by the parents.
- Basic document 3 — proof of legal stay: Applicants who apply outside their country of nationality must submit proof of legal residence in the country of application valid for no less than the visa's validity and the permitted duration of stay. Applicants who were formerly Chinese nationals and later acquired foreign nationality must also submit their former Chinese passport or a former Chinese visa.
- L-visa specific documents (either one of the two): either travel documents such as round-trip flight bookings and hotel bookings, or an invitation letter issued by a Chinese organisation or individual. In other words, an invitation letter is not mandatory for an L visa — flight and hotel bookings as itinerary documents are equally acceptable.
- What the invitation letter must contain: the invited person's personal details (name, gender, date of birth, etc.); the travel arrangements (dates of arrival and departure, places to visit, etc.); and the inviting organisation's or person's details (name, contact telephone, address, organisation seal, signature of the legal representative or inviting individual, etc.). Unless originals are specifically required, the invitation letter may be a fax, copy or printout, but consular officers may ask for the original; an invitation from an individual in China must be accompanied by a copy of that person's identity document.
- Application process: In general, register an account on the China Online Visa Application system or the visa application service centre website, complete the application form online and upload documents, then attend the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre at the appointed time to submit the application and pay the fee, and finally collect your passport and visa against the receipt. Some centres do not yet offer online payment, in which case the fee is paid on site when submitting documents.
- Processing time, validity and duration of stay: Processing times differ between visa application service centres and embassies or consulates, and normally take several working days; whether express service is available also varies by centre. Check with the local Chinese embassy or consulate or the visa application service centre. The visa's validity, the permitted duration of stay and the number of entries are decided by the consular officer according to the applicant's circumstances — what you write on the form is only an indication, and the visa as issued is decisive. You must not stay in China beyond the permitted duration; if you need to extend your stay, apply to the exit-entry administration of the public security authority.
Note that the document checklist varies slightly from place to place. Chinese embassies and consulates and Chinese visa application service centres may impose additional local requirements, such as a personal information processing consent form required under local privacy law or a declaration of countries previously visited. Before submitting, follow the checklist published by the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country or by the local visa application service centre.
In addition, the consular officer decides whether to issue a visa and determines its validity, number of entries and permitted duration of stay according to the applicant's particular circumstances, and may require further supporting documents or an interview. No agency or individual can guarantee the outcome of a visa application, so allow ample time and complete the form truthfully.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
