China Visa for US Citizens: Appointment, Documents and Biometrics

US citizens generally need a visa before travelling to China and cannot enter visa-free, with narrow exceptions such as 24-hour direct transit and the 240-hour visa-free transit policy. The process runs: complete the online form, book an appointment at a Chinese Visa Application Service Center, submit in person with biometrics, then pay and collect. Below is each point in turn: appointments, documents, processing time, fees and the cases where no visa is needed.

  • Do you need an appointment? Yes. US citizens must first complete the COVA online visa application form and print the confirmation page, then book a submission slot through a Chinese Visa Application Service Center. You submit at the center on your appointment; you cannot walk into an embassy counter.
  • Document checklist: a passport with sufficient validity and blank visa pages, a recent compliant photo, the signed application confirmation page, an itinerary or an invitation from China, round-trip tickets and hotel bookings, and proof of legal residence or status in the US if you are not a US citizen applying there.
  • Biometrics: fingerprints are normally collected in person at the visa application center. Applicants under 14, over 70, or those whose fingerprints genuinely cannot be captured may be exempt; follow the center's published notice.
  • Processing time: standard processing usually takes several working days, excluding courier time. Expedited service is available only if you qualify and carries an extra fee. Processing can slow before peak season and public holidays, so apply well ahead of your travel date.
  • Fees: the visa fee is tiered by visa category and number of entries and is published by the embassy or consulate; the application center charges a separate service fee. Rates can change, so check the amounts currently published by the embassy and the center.
  • When no visa is needed: the US is on the list of countries eligible for 240-hour visa-free transit. With a valid international travel document and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country, you can enter visa-free at designated ports and stay within the permitted area. Direct transit within 24 hours without leaving the restricted port area also requires no visa, and regional policies such as Hainan's visa-free entry apply to eligible US citizens as well.

Choosing the visa category: L for tourism and family visits, M for commercial trade, F for exchanges and visits, Z for work, X for study, G for transit. A mismatch between the category and your actual purpose is one of the most common reasons for refusal. If a trip mixes sightseeing and business, declare the main purpose and explain the rest in the invitation letter.

Where to submit: Chinese Visa Application Service Centers in the US operate in Washington DC, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago, among others, each covering specific states; submitting outside your consular district may not be accepted. Check each center's website for addresses, appointment rules and jurisdiction. Under the reciprocal arrangement between China and the US, eligible applicants often receive longer-validity multiple-entry visas, but whether a visa is issued and for how long is decided case by case by the embassy. No agency can guarantee an outcome.

The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
