Bringing a Minor to China: Visa Documents and Signature Rules
Applying for a Chinese visa for a child takes a few extra documents: a birth certificate, the parents' identification, a consent letter from any parent not travelling, and a form signed by both parents or the legal guardian. Miss one and the application may be sent back for supplementation.
- Passport: every applicant needs a separate passport, infants and children included; a child cannot travel on a parent's passport. It must be valid for at least six months from the application date and have at least two blank visa pages.
- Form signature: for applicants under 18, the application form must be signed by both parents or by the legal guardian. If a guardian signs, bring the legal documents establishing guardianship and the guardian's passport data page.
- Birth certificate: it must show both parents' details. If it is not in Chinese or English, a translation is usually required; if personal details have changed, an official change document is needed.
- Parents' documents and status: copies of the parents' passports or ID cards. If you apply outside your country of nationality, proof of the parents' legal stay, work or study status is also required.
- Consent letter: when one or both parents are not travelling, provide a consent letter stating the child's travel dates, the accompanying adult and the parents' contact details.
- Overseas-born children of Chinese origin: on a first application, the parents' passports and visas at the time of birth and naturalisation papers may also be requested so nationality can be assessed.
- Local differences: document lists differ slightly between visa application service centres. Before submitting, follow what your local centre and the Chinese embassy or consulate publish.
The consent letter is the item families most often forget on a first application. Visa centres are explicit: a parent who is not travelling must provide a consent letter covering the applicant's travel dates and the parents' contact details. When neither parent travels and a grandparent or friend takes the child, this document matters most.
On visa-free entry: if the child holds a passport that qualifies under China's unilateral visa-free policy and the trip falls within its scope, a separate visa is generally not needed. Whether the policy applies and how long the child may stay is determined by the official notices and the interpretation of the Chinese embassy or consulate, so check again before departure.
The usual sequence is to complete the form online, book an appointment, then attend the visa centre for fingerprints and document submission. Keep the parents' itinerary, the child's birth certificate and the consent letter in one folder; verification at the counter goes much faster.
The above is a summary of key points only. Please refer to the official announcement for the authoritative version.
