New Passport, Old Visa: When Your Chinese Visa Still Works
If your passport expires and you are issued a new one, a still-valid Chinese visa in the old passport does not have to be reissued and does not need to be transferred. You simply carry both passports together, provided your personal details match exactly across the two documents.
- You can keep using it, but carry both passports: the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles explains that when a new passport is issued because the old one expired, a still-valid visa in the old passport can be used by presenting the old and new passports together. No visa transfer is needed.
- Your identity details must match: name, sex, date of birth and nationality in the new passport must be identical to those in the old one. The passport number may differ. If any of these details changed, you must apply for a new visa and pay the fee again.
- Validity and entries are different things: the enter-before date is the deadline for entering China and expires at 24:00 Beijing time on that date. Once the permitted number of entries is used up, the visa is no longer valid even if the enter-before date has not passed.
- The stay period starts the day after entry: the maximum number of days you may stay on each entry is counted from the day after arrival, which is not the same as the visa validity period.
- A visa does not guarantee admission: border inspection authorities decide whether to admit you. Once issued, a visa cannot be changed in validity, duration of stay or number of entries; you would need to apply again.
In practice, keep the old and new passports together and show both at check-in and at border inspection. Do not cut the corner off the old passport or tear out pages yourself; a damaged or altered visa page may be treated as invalid.
If the old passport was lost, stolen or damaged rather than routinely replaced, the situation is different. A new visa application is normally required, so confirm with the Chinese embassy, consulate or visa application service center before booking travel.
