Shanghai Pudong Airport to the City: Maglev, Metro and Taxi
Shanghai Pudong International Airport lies in the Pudong New Area, roughly 30 kilometres from the city centre. There are four main ways into the city: the maglev train, Metro Line 2, airport buses, and taxis (including ride-hailing cars). Each suits a different situation. The options are set out below by travel time and cost, followed by advice for late-night arrivals.
- Maglev train: links Pudong Airport with Longyang Road metro station. An ordinary single ticket costs about 50 yuan and a VIP single ticket about 100 yuan, and the journey takes about eight minutes. At Longyang Road you can change to Metro Line 2, Line 7 and other lines. It suits travellers heading fastest to the Longyang Road area or changing to the metro.
- Metro Line 2: the Pudong Airport station sits between Terminals 1 and 2 and runs directly to Lujiazui, People's Square, East Nanjing Road and other central areas. The fare is about 7 to 8 yuan, and the trip to People's Square takes about one hour. The first and last trains at Pudong Airport station are around 06:00 and 22:30; check the times posted at the station on the day.
- Airport buses: several routes run from Pudong Airport to the city centre, the Hongqiao transport hub and some railway stations. Fares are charged by route, generally within a few tens of yuan. Check the airport's official information for current routes, fares and timetables.
- Taxi and ride-hailing: the taxi rank is outside the arrivals level of the terminals. A trip to the city centre generally costs about 150 to 200 yuan plus the expressway toll, with the meter as the final reference; ride-hailing cars must be picked up at the designated point. Ask for the meter to be used and keep the receipt.
- Time and cost at a glance: take the maglev if you are in a hurry — about eight minutes to Longyang Road; take Metro Line 2 to save money — about 7 to 8 yuan; for heavy luggage or a group, a taxi or ride-hailing car is easier; airport buses suit travellers whose destination is near one of their fixed stops.
- Late-night arrivals: the last Metro Line 2 train from Pudong Airport station leaves at about 22:30, and the maglev stops earlier. After that, choose an airport night bus (subject to the airport's arrangements that day), a taxi or a ride-hailing car. Check the day's last-train and night-bus information on the airport website or at the terminal service desk before you travel.
Tickets and payment: maglev and metro tickets can be bought from ticket machines or staffed counters at the station, and some channels accept mobile QR codes or bank cards — check what the station accepts. Airport bus tickets are bought at the bus stops outside the terminals. Taxis charge by meter plus the expressway toll. Airport, maglev and metro operating details change with the season and with route adjustments, so check each operator's official information before travelling.
Luggage note: the maglev and the metro have some limits on the size of carry-on luggage, so travellers with large bags may prefer a taxi, a ride-hailing car or an airport bus. First-time visitors to China may find it useful to save a screenshot of their hotel address in Chinese to show the taxi driver.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
