Booking Domestic Flights in China with a Passport
For foreign travellers, a passport is a valid identity document for boarding domestic flights in China. This guide covers booking channels, how to fill in your document details, check-in, verification at the gate, the usual reasons bookings fail, and the change and refund rules.
- Booking channels: you can book through an airline ticket office, its customer service hotline, official website, official app or WeChat account, as well as legitimate online travel platforms and authorised sales agents. Official channels are preferable, and keep your booking receipt.
- How to enter your document details: the document information you give when booking must match the document you travel with. Foreign passengers may use a passport, and the information on your valid boarding identity document and your valid boarding voucher must be consistent.
- Check-in options: you can check in at the airport counter with the same passport used for booking, or check in online via the airline's website or app. Whether international documents are supported online depends on the airline.
- Boarding pass and document checks: when checking in, going through security and boarding, you must carry the same passport used for the booking, with the name spelled exactly as it appears in the passport.
- Common reasons bookings fail: a name that does not match the passport, a mistyped document number, insufficient document validity, a booking document that differs from the document presented at the airport, or transiting via a third country or region without meeting the transit requirements.
- Changes and refunds: the airline or its sales agent must inform you of the change and refund rules when selling the ticket. Changes and refunds requested for personal reasons follow the ticket's conditions of use. Where a flight is cancelled, delayed or overbooked for reasons not attributable to the passenger, the airline may not charge a refund fee. Refunds should generally be completed within 7 working days of receiving a valid refund request, excluding the time taken by financial institutions.
- International legs: for international flights, make sure your passport remains valid for at least six months beyond the departure date of the last flight on your itinerary.
Under Article 31 of the Rules on Civil Aviation Security Screening (Order No. 76 of 2016 of the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China), passengers on domestic flights must present a valid boarding identity document and a valid boarding voucher. A passport held by a foreign passenger is a valid boarding identity document.
When you book connecting flights, the itinerary must be flown in sequence; an unused segment affects the following segments. If you need your checked baggage to be through-checked, confirm this with the airline in advance. Cabin classes and discounted tickets differ considerably in their conditions of use and in change and refund fees, so read them carefully before buying.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
