Baggage Allowance on Flights to China
On flights to China, the free checked baggage allowance depends on the airline, the route and the cabin class — and can even differ between fare types on the same route. Using published rules from Hainan Airlines and others, this guide covers checked and carry-on limits, excess baggage, connecting flights and common questions.
- Allowance depends on route and cabin: With Hainan Airlines, for example, on routes between China and the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Southwest Pacific, economy class is generally two pieces of up to 23 kg each with a total of the three sides not exceeding 158 cm, while business class is two pieces of up to 32 kg each, also within 158 cm. On some intra-regional routes (such as within Europe or within Asia), economy class is one piece of 23 kg. The airline's published rules are authoritative.
- Fare-brand differences: Economy class on the same route is often split into fare brands such as saver, basic, standard and flexible, each with a different free baggage allowance. The lowest tier may include no free checked baggage, so check the baggage rules of the fare you are buying.
- Per-piece limits: On Hainan Airlines international routes, a single checked bag must weigh at least 2 kg and no more than 32 kg, with the sum of the three sides between 40 cm and 203 cm; on domestic routes the per-piece limit is 50 kg. Bags exceeding the limits that cannot be split must be handled through the airline's cargo department.
- Carry-on baggage: You can normally take one carry-on bag plus one small personal item; the exact size and weight limits are set by the operating airline, and bags above the carry-on limit must be checked in.
- Children and infants: Passengers with a child ticket receive the same free baggage allowance as adults. Infant tickets generally include one free checked bag of up to 10 kg with the three sides totalling no more than 115 cm, plus one free collapsible stroller or bassinet.
- Frequent-flyer extras: With Hainan Airlines, for example, Fortune Wings platinum, gold and silver members receive one additional free checked bag on top of the allowance for their cabin.
- Through-checking on connections: On an interline ticket under a single ticket number, baggage can usually be checked through to the final destination, but confirm this at check-in. With self-transfer (separately ticketed) itineraries, you normally need to collect your bags at the connecting airport and check them in again, and any missed connection is at your own risk.
- Prohibited and restricted items: Civil aviation rules apply to both carry-on and checked baggage. Flammable and explosive items and controlled blades are prohibited. Power banks and spare lithium batteries must be carried in the cabin, not in checked baggage, and must comply with energy limits.
- Excess charges and common fees: Overweight, extra or oversized bags are normally charged at the airline's published excess-baggage rates, which vary by route and carrier. Paying at the airport usually costs more than buying extra allowance online in advance, so check the airline's website or pre-purchase before you fly.
Baggage rules are published by each operating airline and can differ between carriers on the same route, or even between fare products on the same carrier. Before you travel, check the baggage rules for the airline on your ticket, or call the airline's customer service. If your itinerary involves more than one carrier, the rules of every segment must be satisfied.
At check-in and boarding, staff check whether your checked and carry-on baggage comply. If your baggage exceeds the free allowance, you will normally have to pay the excess rate at the airport. If it contains prohibited items, you may be asked to remove them on the spot or hand them over, which can delay your journey.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
