Self-Transfer Flights in China: Baggage and Missed-Connection Risks
To save money, many travellers book two separate flights, known as a self-transfer. Fares can be lower, but you must re-check your own baggage and bear the consequences yourself if the connection fails.
- Difference from a through ticket: a connecting (through) flight means two or more flights booked under a single ticket number, even if operated by different airlines. A non-through itinerary is issued segment by segment by the operating carriers, usually involving two or more separate contracts of carriage.
- Baggage must be re-checked: with a self-transfer ticket, baggage generally cannot be through-checked, so you must collect it at the transit airport and re-check it and go through security again. Even with a through ticket, it is worth confirming with the airline whether baggage can be through-checked.
- Minimum connecting time: at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, for example, the minimum connecting time within the same terminal is 60 minutes for domestic-to-domestic, 75 minutes for domestic-international transfers and 75 minutes for international-to-international; between different terminals (T1 and S1, T2 and S2) the times are 75, 90 and 90 minutes respectively.
- Who bears a missed connection: the two flights of a self-transfer itinerary exist independently and do not affect each other. If one segment is changed (including involuntary cancellation, delay or overbooking) and you cannot take the other, the boarding and refund/change rules of the other flight remain unchanged, and the related costs are borne by the traveller.
- Is it worth the saving? Self-transfer tickets are often cheaper, but you take on the risk of a missed connection, the time cost of re-checking baggage, and possible overnight accommodation and change fees. On a tight itinerary, with lots of baggage, or on a first trip to China, the saving may not cover the risk.
- Booking tips: leave ample connecting time between the two segments, prefer transfers within the same terminal, choose refundable or changeable fares for both segments, consider travel insurance that covers missed connections, and check the entry and transit requirements of your transit point before departure.
Two further points are worth noting. First, a through itinerary must be travelled in sequence unless an involuntary change occurs: for example, if you book Guangzhou–Beijing–Shenyang and do not use the Guangzhou–Beijing segment, the Beijing–Shenyang segment cannot be used either. Second, some online travel platforms sell combinations of different flights as a single product, so confirm before booking whether it is a through itinerary.
If your transit point is an airport in China, also confirm whether you need to clear entry formalities and whether you must collect your baggage and go through security again. With heavy baggage or items that need declaring, it is advisable to allow more than three hours for the connection and to keep the booking records for each segment so that you can approach each ticketing airline if problems arise.
