Flights to China from Australia: Routes, Flight Times and When to Book
Flying from Australia to China, the main departure points are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, with Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou as the principal arrival cities. Knowing which routes are non-stop, how long they take and when to book usually saves more money than repeatedly refreshing fare comparison sites.
- Main airports: on the Australian side, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth dominate, and Adelaide now also has a non-stop route to Shanghai. On the Chinese side, arrivals concentrate at the three hubs of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, with additional points including Chengdu, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Jinan and Wuhan.
- Airlines operating the routes: Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Xiamen Airlines and Sichuan Airlines, plus Qantas, which operates non-stop Australia-China flights through a code-share arrangement with China Eastern.
- Indicative flight times: Sydney or Melbourne to Shanghai takes roughly 10 to 11 hours, to Beijing about 11 to 12 hours, and to Guangzhou about 9.5 to 10 hours. Departures from Perth and Brisbane vary considerably by destination. Always check the actual schedule of the flight you book.
- Seasonal capacity increases: around Chinese New Year and the winter break, the summer peak, and Australian school holidays, airlines typically add frequencies or restore seasonal routes. In quiet periods frequencies may be cut, so the same route can operate a completely different schedule from one month to the next.
- How far ahead to book: two to three months ahead is the usual advice, and earlier for Chinese New Year, the National Day golden week and Australian school holidays. Midweek departures are generally cheaper than Friday to Sunday, and the days just outside holiday periods show the biggest price gaps.
- Common connecting points: Hong Kong, China (Cathay Pacific), Singapore (Singapore Airlines, Scoot), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia) and Bangkok (Thai Airways). These suit secondary Chinese cities without non-stop service, but usually add three to eight hours in total.
Non-stop or connecting: non-stop saves time, keeps baggage checked through and avoids transit formalities. Connecting flights reach more cities and are often cheaper, but confirm two things: whether baggage is checked through to the final destination, and whether you must collect and re-check it at the transit point. This matters most on itineraries that change airline or airport.
On transit: travellers connecting through a mainland Chinese airport to a third country may qualify for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy. But if China is your final destination, the trip is not transit at all, and you need either a visa or an applicable visa exemption. Establish which situation applies before you buy the ticket.
Australian passport holders: Australia is currently on China's list of countries covered by unilateral visa exemption (one of two in Oceania). Holders of ordinary Australian passports may enter China without a visa for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchange visits, or transit, for stays of up to 30 days, counted from 00:00 on the day after entry; the current policy runs until 31 December 2026. Policies can change, so check the National Immigration Administration's published list before you travel. Stays beyond 30 days, work and study still require a visa obtained in advance.
Booking and arrival logistics: the name on the ticket must match the passport spelling exactly. Have your return or onward ticket and hotel bookings ready on arrival. The time difference between Australia and China is two to three hours, and overnight flights often land early in the morning, so check that the arrival date and your hotel check-in date line up, and whether an early check-in is possible.
