Scholarships to Study in China: Beyond the CSC
The Chinese Government Scholarship, or CSC, is not the only way to fund your studies in China. Central and local governments, universities, companies and other organisations all run support programmes at different levels. This guide sets out the main categories in one place, along with how each one is applied for, the general requirements and how competitive they are.
- Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC): established by China's Ministry of Education and administered by the China Scholarship Council, it supports undergraduates, master's and doctoral students, general scholars and senior scholars. The award covers tuition, accommodation, a living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance, and the funding period includes Chinese language preparatory study plus the degree programme. There are four application routes: the country programme, applied for through the relevant sending authority in your home country (normally launched each October); the Chinese university independent admission programme, applied for directly to the university running the project; special scholarship programmes, applied for through the relevant international organisation; and the credit-student programme, applied for through the partner institutions in China and abroad.
- International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship: established by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education, it is open to non-Chinese nationals who intend to pursue a career in Chinese language education and related fields, generally aged 16 to 35, with the age limit extended to 45 for in-service Chinese language teachers. Categories include a master's in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages, a bachelor's in Chinese language and literature (teaching Chinese as an international language), a one-academic-year study programme and a one-semester study programme. Applications must be submitted both to the scholarship application website and to the host institution, and must be recommended by a recommending body such as a Confucius Institute, an independent Confucius Classroom, selected Chinese language test centres, Chinese departments at universities, or a Chinese embassy or consulate.
- Local government scholarships: set up by provinces and municipalities to attract international students, these generally target full-time international students enrolled at universities in that city or province. The Nanjing Municipal Government Scholarship for International Students, for example, has been offered since 2013 to international students at universities in Nanjing, with funding levels that differ by degree level; application dates, quotas and selection criteria are published each year by each city.
- University scholarships: Chinese universities commonly offer institution-level scholarships or awards for international students, used to waive tuition or accommodation fees or to provide a living subsidy, usually handled by the university's international student office. Requirements and coverage vary considerably between institutions, and this is generally the most accessible and broadest category.
- Corporate scholarships: some companies operating in China, social organisations and industry bodies offer special scholarships or grants for international students, usually launched jointly with a university. Places are limited and are often tied to a particular field of study or programme, so ask the international student office at your target university.
- How competitive they are: overall, Chinese Government Scholarship places are allocated by embassies, consulates or universities and are the most competitive; the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship has a clear focus and well-defined requirements and suits applicants heading for Chinese language education; local government and university scholarships cover more students and are comparatively easier to obtain; corporate scholarships are few in number and highly targeted. Note that an applicant generally cannot hold more than one Chinese government scholarship at the same time, so confirm your eligibility before applying.
Timeline: the CSC country programme normally opens each October, while the timing of programmes applied for through universities or embassies varies. The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship opens for applications on 1 March 2026, with a deadline of 15 May for the September intake and 31 October for the following March intake. Because the schedules differ so much, plan six months to a year ahead.
Documents and requirements: most scholarships ask for a passport, proof of your highest qualification, academic transcripts, language test results such as HSK and HSKK, recommendation letters, a study plan, a medical examination record and a certificate of no criminal record. Some documents must be notarised, and validity periods matter, for example a police clearance certificate or medical examination record is generally required to be issued within the previous six months.
Two reminders: quotas, amounts and deadlines change every year, so the details above are general and the current-year announcements from the China Scholarship Council, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, and the relevant local governments and universities are authoritative. Also note that a scholarship and admission are separate matters, and securing a place at a university usually strengthens your scholarship application.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
