Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake: Tickets, Transport and the Best Time to Visit
Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake lies just south of Dunhuang in Gansu Province and is famous for its pyramid-shaped dunes and the crescent-shaped spring at their foot. It is one of Dunhuang's signature natural sights. This guide covers what it is, how to get there, tickets and opening hours, the best season, practical tips and common questions.
- What it is: The scenic area is about 5 km south of Dunhuang city and is a national 5A-rated attraction, known for its wind-formed dunes, distinctive pyramid-shaped sand hills and the Crescent Lake. A spring shaped like a crescent moon sits among the dunes, making this one of Dunhuang's signature natural sights; it is usually combined with the Mogao Caves in the same trip.
- How to get there: From Dunhuang city centre you can take public bus No. 3 (which runs between the scenic area and the city and is operated by Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Group), or a taxi or ride-hailing car; the drive from the city is short. From Dunhuang Airport or Dunhuang Railway Station, it is usual to reach the city centre first and then transfer to a bus or taxi. In peak season the city sometimes runs a free evening shuttle service; check local notices for details.
- Tickets: A full-price ticket costs about CNY 110 per person in high season (roughly April to October) and about CNY 55 in low season. Students, older visitors and others may be entitled to half-price or free admission under the scenic area's rules, on presentation of valid ID. Prices are subject to the scenic area's official announcements.
- Buying tickets: The scenic area uses real-name reservations, so book in advance through the official channels to avoid arriving with no ticket available. A ticket can generally be used for multiple entries within its validity period; check the official ticket notice for details.
- Opening hours: Opening and ticket-checking times change with sunrise, sunset and the season. In summer the area has operated from 05:00 to 20:30, and in autumn from 06:00 to 19:30. Check the day's official notice before you go; the scenic area's enquiry line is 400-118-3388.
- Activities inside: Camel riding is the most popular activity, generally about CNY 100 per person for a ride of roughly 40 minutes, at prices set by the scenic area. Sand sledging and shuttle carts are also available; all are charged separately and are not included in the ticket.
- Best season: May to October is generally comfortable. September and October are cooler with good visibility, ideal for sunsets and dune light. July and August are the summer peak, with high temperatures and large crowds, so take sun protection and drink plenty of water. Winter is cold but offers the chance to see dunes after snowfall.
- Payment and practical tips: Tickets and on-site activities can normally be paid for online or by scanning a code on site. Foreign visitors can use Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to an overseas bank card, and should also carry a little cash as a backup. Dunhuang has a large temperature difference between day and night and strong ultraviolet light, so bring sunscreen, a hat and drinking water. Sports shoes or rented sand-proof shoe covers are recommended on the dunes.
- Common questions (1): Online reservations generally require real-name details. Whether foreign visitors can book using passport details, and which documents are needed for on-site verification, should be confirmed with the scenic area in advance (400-118-3388). Main signage and service points generally have English information; specific guide services are subject to what is available on site.
- Common questions (2): On-site activities such as camel riding and sand sledging cost extra. Late afternoon is the best time for sunsets and dune light, so allow two to three hours. In peak periods (July to August and the National Day holiday), book ahead and visit outside the busiest hours.
Dunhuang sits at the western end of the Hexi Corridor and the city itself is compact, so Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake is usually combined with the Mogao Caves and Dunhuang's night market: a common plan is the Mogao Caves in the morning and the dunes at sunset in the late afternoon. The scenic area is mostly sand, and visiting is mainly on foot or by camel, so pace yourself and protect against sun, dehydration and sand getting into your belongings.
Ticket prices, opening hours and activity prices are subject to the scenic area's official announcements. Before you go, confirm the day's opening hours, reservation availability and the documents needed for discounts through official channels. In strong wind or sandstorm weather the area may adjust its hours or close temporarily; follow on-site notices.
