Potala Palace Guide: Tickets, Booking and the Best Season
The Potala Palace sits on the Red Hill in central Lhasa. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level and a national 5A-rated scenic area, and for many visitors it is the highlight of a trip to Tibet. It uses a real-name booking system, closes on Mondays, offers two ticket routes and does not sell same-day tickets. Based on information published by the Potala Palace Administration and the Tibet Autonomous Region Department of Culture and Tourism, this guide explains how to get there, how to book and how to plan your visit.
- What it is: the Potala Palace stands at Beijing Middle Road in Chengguan District, Lhasa, built against the Red Hill. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level and a national 5A-rated scenic area, made up mainly of the White Palace, the Red Palace and the Snow City at the foot of the hill. It is a key stop for understanding Tibetan history, architecture and religious art.
- Getting there: most visitors start in Lhasa. Lhasa Gonggar International Airport runs shuttle buses to and from the city: buses from the city to the airport leave between 04:30 and 19:30, roughly every 10 to 15 minutes, while buses from the airport to the city depart according to arriving flight schedules and leave when full. The enquiry number is 0891-6826282 and the fare is generally about 30 yuan; taxis are also available. If you arrive at Lhasa railway station on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, you can transfer to a public bus or taxi into the city. The Potala Palace is in the city centre and can be reached on foot or by city bus.
- Tickets and opening hours: the peak season runs from 1 May to 31 October, opening at 09:00 with last admission at 15:40; the low season runs from 1 November to 30 April, opening at 09:30 with last admission at 15:20. In peak season a full-price ticket is 200 yuan per person for Route 1 and 100 yuan for Route 2, with concession tickets at 100 yuan and 50 yuan respectively; in low season a full-price ticket is 100 yuan per person and a concession ticket 50 yuan. Book no more than ten days ahead through the Potala Palace Ticket Booking System or the official “Potala Palace” WeChat account. Same-day tickets are not sold, booking is by real name and facial recognition is required. The palace has closed on Mondays since 1 December 2025, except on national public holidays.
- Best season: May to October has relatively comfortable weather and higher oxygen levels and is the traditional peak season, but bookings are tight and you need to reserve early. November to April is the low season, with fewer visitors and cheaper tickets, but temperatures are low and the day-night temperature difference is large, so bring warm clothing.
- Payment and practical tips: tickets are bought through the official channel on your own phone's WeChat, and after a successful purchase you cannot book a second ticket within seven days of the visit date. On the day of your visit, arrive at the main gate security checkpoint one hour in advance. Lhasa sits at about 3,650 metres above sea level, so take it easy on your first day, drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity and use sun protection.
- Common questions from foreign visitors: foreign visitors book with a real name using a passport or other valid document, but travelling to Tibet also requires an entry confirmation letter (Tibet Travel Permit) arranged through a licensed travel agency that handles foreign visitors; individuals cannot apply directly, and foreign visitors must travel in an organised group while in Tibet. Photography is generally not allowed inside the halls but is permitted in outdoor areas. Visits are subject to capacity limits, advance booking and staggered entry, and must be completed within your booked time slot; follow on-site instructions.
Booking details: the Potala Palace has not authorised any website or third-party platform to sell its tickets, and the “Potala Palace Ticket Booking System” WeChat mini program is the only channel for booking a visit. One WeChat account booking one adult ticket can also link two elderly people or two minors. Visitors aged 60 or over who have difficulty using smart technology, and other special groups, may book on site one day in advance at the Potala Palace Ticket Booking Office, subject to availability.
About the ticket routes: Route 1 covers a fuller itinerary, while Route 2 is more condensed. Since 20 September 2026 the palace has also opened a separate “Snow City” route with its own ticket; it does not include the main buildings and is considerably cheaper than the main routes, and further discounts apply during the “Winter Tibet” promotion. Check the official mini program's ticket page for the current details.
Altitude and safety: Lhasa is about 3,650 metres above sea level, so rest well before and after arriving, avoid alcohol and strenuous activity, and seek medical help promptly if you feel unwell. The site operates capacity limits, advance booking and staggered entry, so follow staff instructions and do not carry flammable, explosive or other prohibited items. All prices, times and booking methods above are subject to the latest announcements from the Potala Palace Administration and the Tibet Autonomous Region Department of Culture and Tourism.
