Pingyao Ancient City Travel Guide: Tickets, Transport and Best Season
Pingyao Ancient City lies in Pingyao County, Jinzhong, Shanxi Province. First built in the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou, it has a history of more than 2,800 years and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997 together with the Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples. Entry to the streets is free while the sights charge admission — this guide covers tickets, transport and practical tips.
- What it is: Pingyao is one of China's best-preserved Ming and Qing county towns, made up of the ancient city wall, old shops, streets, temples and courtyard houses. It was designated a National Historical and Cultural City in 1986 and is now a 5A-rated scenic area. The Rishengchang Exchange Shop, founded in 1824, is regarded as the birthplace of China's modern financial industry, and the city also hosts events such as the Pingyao International Photography Festival.
- Getting there: by high-speed rail, get off at Pingyao Ancient City Station and take bus 108, about 25 minutes, to the south gate (subject to local bus operator information). By ordinary train, get off at Pingyao Station and take bus 1 one stop to the north gate. Taiyuan Wusu International Airport has a Pingyao city terminal. Inside the old town you can ride the electric sightseeing carts, about RMB 10 per person per ride.
- Tickets and opening hours: the Ancient City through ticket costs RMB 125 per person and covers 22 core sights inside the city, valid for three days from activation, with a half-price ticket at RMB 65. The Shuanglin Temple (RMB 35) and Zhenguo Temple (RMB 25) lie outside the walls and require separate tickets. Opening hours are 08:00–18:00 from 1 April to 7 October, and 08:00–17:30 from 8 October to 31 March.
- Best season: autumn (September to October) is cooler and is the period most travellers recommend; summers are rainy and winters cold, so check the local weather forecast before you go. The Pingyao International Photography Festival is usually held in autumn, so book earlier if your visit coincides with it or with public holidays.
- Payment and practical tips: the official ticketing channel is the 'Pingyao Ancient City Scenic Area Official Service Platform' WeChat account, which allows advance booking, and tickets can also be bought at the ticket windows on site. Ticketing is under a real-name system, so carry your passport or other valid ID. Mobile payment (Alipay, WeChat) and bank cards are widely accepted in the area, but it is still worth carrying a little cash.
Q1: Do I need a ticket to enter the old town? No. Pingyao operates on the principle that entry to the streets is free and the sights charge admission, so walking the streets and eating there require no ticket; only the core sights inside the city require the through ticket.
Q2: Can foreigners use a passport? Yes. Ticketing is under a real-name system and a passport is a valid identity document. Online booking usually requires real-name registration; if you cannot book online, you can buy tickets at the on-site ticket windows (subject to what the scenic area announces).
Q3: How does the through ticket work? It is valid for three days from activation, but each sight may be entered only once and is cancelled after being punched or verified, so plan your route and allow at least a full day.
Q4: Are there discounts? Children aged 6 or under or 1.2 metres or shorter, seniors aged 60 or over, serving and retired military personnel (with a preferential-treatment card), people with disabilities, police officers and firefighters may enter free with valid ID. Teenagers aged 18 or under and students in full-time undergraduate programmes or below pay half price. From 1 May 2026, Shanxi Province grants free admission to all state-owned A-rated scenic areas province-wide for visitors aged 60 and over, and Pingyao is included.
Q5: Is there an English guide? Signage in the scenic area is bilingual. The availability of audio guides and human guides is subject to what the scenic area announces on site.
