Mount Fanjing: Tickets, Cable Car and the Best Time to Visit

Mount Fanjing stands in Tongren, Guizhou, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2018. It is also a national 5A scenic area. Its signature image is the Red Cloud Golden Summit, a lone pinnacle split by a fissure into two halves, each topped by a small temple and linked by stone steps and a bridge. Add the Mushroom Rock, the Ten Thousand Scrolls Cliff and frequent seas of cloud, and it is one of the most rewarding mountains in southwest China.

  • Getting there: take the high-speed train to Tongren Station or Tongren South Station, then a scenic-area shuttle or bus, about 1 to 1.5 hours by road. From Tongren Fenghuang Airport it is about an hour's drive to the East Gate by hired car or tourist shuttle. Local buses run from Jiangkou bus station to the gate in about 30 minutes, roughly every 40 minutes.
  • East Gate versus West Gate: the East Gate at Heiwanhe in Jiangkou County has shuttle buses and a cable car and carries almost all visitors. The West Gate at Huguosi in Yinjiang County is a full hike with no cable car. Tickets for the two gates are not interchangeable, so decide your approach before buying.
  • Tickets and hours: the main gate ticket is about 100 yuan in peak season (March to November) and about 90 yuan in low season. Shuttle buses cost about 24 yuan one way on the east line and about 16 yuan on the west line; the cable car is about 70 yuan one way and about 140 yuan return. The East Gate starts admitting visitors around 06:30 and closes at 15:00; the West Gate stops admitting around 13:00. Check official notices for confirmation.
  • Reservations: entry is by timed, real-name reservation, with a daily cap of 9,000 visitors. Book through the Mount Fanjing official WeChat account, the Yimayou Guizhou mini programme, or Ctrip, Meituan and Tongcheng. Same-day tickets are sold only while stock lasts, so book several days ahead around holidays.
  • Best season: April to October is the most comfortable, and September to November offers the best odds of cloud seas and autumn colour. December to February is low season, when the summit can ice over and the cable car may stop for weather. The rainy season brings heavy mist, and seeing the summit is partly luck.
  • Payment and practical tips: online tickets are real-name, and official channels mainly use mainland Chinese phone numbers and ID cards. Food at the summit is expensive with few choices, so carry water and snacks. The summit is 8 to 13 degrees Celsius colder than the valley, so pack a windproof layer and rain gear.
  • The Red Cloud Golden Summit: to climb it you scan a QR code at Pudu Square for a free timed slot, and numbers are capped. Slots go fast on peak mornings, so collect yours first and visit Mushroom Rock and the Old Golden Summit afterwards.

FAQ 1: Do I need a Chinese ID card? Entry is by real-name reservation. Chinese visitors scan their ID cards at the gate; foreign visitors holding passports normally go through a staffed lane. Carry your passport original, since photos or copies may not be accepted.

FAQ 2: Can I buy tickets online with a passport? Official channels are built around mainland Chinese phone numbers and ID cards. In practice many foreign visitors book through OTA platforms that accept passport details, or buy at the visitor centre counter with their passport. Counter stock is limited in peak season, so book ahead when you can.

FAQ 3: Is there an English guide? Signage is mainly in Chinese, with English notes at some points, and guided tours are usually in Chinese. Download an offline map in advance or arrange a local guide in Jiangkou town.

FAQ 4: How strenuous is the climb? On the east line the shuttle bus and cable car remove most of the ascent, but there is still about 40 minutes of wooden-boardwalk steps from the upper cable car station to Pudu Square. Hiking up is prohibited after 14:00 and hiking down after 15:00, so do not over-plan the day.

FAQ 5: Can I pay on the mountain? Mobile signal at the summit is unreliable and mobile payments sometimes fail, so carry a little cash. Restaurants and guesthouses in Jiangkou town and along the East Gate commercial street generally accept mobile payments, including linked foreign cards.
