Detian Waterfall Guide: Tickets, Transport and the Best Season

Detian Waterfall sits in Shuolong Town, Daxin County, Chongzuo City, Guangxi, straddling the Guichun River that forms the border between China and Vietnam, so one half of the falls is in China and the other in Vietnam. It is not a mountain park that takes a full day of climbing: a shuttle bus from the visitor centre puts you at the falls, and the main circuit takes about three hours, which makes it a comfortable two-day trip from Nanning.

• What it is: Detian Waterfall is in Shuolong Town, Daxin County, Chongzuo City, Guangxi, linked with the Ban Gioc Falls on the Vietnamese side. It became a national 5A-rated scenic area in 2018 and is often described as Asia's largest transnational waterfall, a three-tier cascade surrounded by karst peaks.
• How to get there: direct buses run from Nanning Langdong Bus Station to the Detian visitor centre, departing at 8:00 and 8:30, taking about 3.5 hours on expressways for roughly 90 yuan, with return departures at 15:30 and 16:00. Alternatively take the train from Nanning Station to Chongzuo South Station (about 53 minutes, roughly 61 yuan), then the scenic-area shuttle from Chongzuo South to the visitor centre (about 2 hours each way, about 80 yuan return). By car, take the Nanyou expressway then the Hena expressway, about 236 km and 3 hours.
• Tickets and opening hours: the daytime ticket includes admission and the return shuttle bus. Adults pay about 115 yuan; children between 1.2 m and 1.5 m, students aged 6 to 18 and visitors over 60 pay about 75 yuan; children under 1.2 m enter free. The evening session costs about 168 yuan per person. The park is open 8:00 to 18:30, ticket checks run 7:30 to 17:00, entry closes at 17:00 and daytime visitors must leave by 18:30. Prices and hours are subject to official announcements.
• Best season: June to November is the high-water period, when the falls carry the most water and throw up the heaviest spray. December to May is the low-water period, when the flow is lighter and more delicate; the Vietnamese side usually releases water daily between 12:00 and 15:00, which is the best window for viewing. Chinese New Year and the National Day holiday are extremely busy and best avoided.
• Payment and practical tips: the scenic area uses real-name, timed-entry booking, so buy tickets in advance through official channels and choose an entry slot. Foreign visitors register with their passport, so carry the original. The river raft, the mountain escalator and the glass walkway are charged separately. Mobile payment dominates inside the park, so bring a little cash as backup. The visitor centre has luggage storage at about 10 yuan per day for small items and 20 yuan for large ones.
• Frequently asked by foreign visitors: do I need a Chinese ID card? Chinese visitors scan their ID card, foreign visitors register with a passport. Can I buy tickets online with a passport? Most official and platform channels accept passport details; if a channel only accepts ID cards, buy at the staffed counter in the visitor centre. Is there an English guide? Signage is in Chinese, English and Vietnamese, but English-speaking guides are not guaranteed, so download an offline map in advance. Can I cross to the Vietnamese side? The China-Vietnam Detian-Ban Gioc cross-border tourism cooperation zone requires a valid passport and the relevant exit-entry documents, booked through a qualified travel agency; check the zone's own announcements. Can I fly a drone? Drones are prohibited in this border area, and climbing the boundary fence is not permitted.

Suggested route: take the shuttle from the visitor centre and start at the river raft dock, which is optional but puts you close to the falls and face to face with visitors on the Vietnamese bank. Then work through viewing platforms 1 to 5; platform 5 has the widest view and is where the whole cascade fits in one frame. Continue to border marker 836 and the China-Vietnam cultural street, then take the shuttle back. The circuit takes about three hours; allow half a day once queuing and photography are included.

What to combine it with: Mingshi Rural Scenery is about 40 minutes away by car, classic karst farmland that pairs well with Detian over two days. Shuolong Town is only a few kilometres from the gate, with plenty of guesthouses and food, and suits an early start the next morning for mist over the river. Daxin County town has more accommodation but is further from the falls.

Border-area notes: the scenic area lies on the China-Vietnam border, so foreign visitors should carry their original passport for inspection. Some border areas may also require a border management zone permit, so confirm in advance with the scenic area (enquiries 0771-3690199, 8:00 to 17:00) or the local public security authorities. Do not climb the boundary fence or approach closed water areas, and wear shoes with grip, as the walkways are slippery after rain.

Photography and kit: in the high-water season the spray is heavy and lenses fog quickly, so bring a cloth. Morning light comes from behind you and crowds are thinner, and it is the best time to catch a rainbow. Summer sun is strong and insects are numerous, so pack sunscreen and repellent.
