China Visa Fees: Consular Fee, Service Fee and Expedited Charges
The cost of a China visa is made up of two main parts: the visa fee (consular fee) charged by the embassy or consulate, and the service fee charged by the Chinese Visa Application Service Center. The visa fee is normally tiered by number of entries and validity period, and is set according to reciprocal arrangements between countries, so applicants of different nationalities may pay different amounts. Before applying, find out which embassy, consulate or visa center accepts your application, and rely on the fee schedule that it publishes.
- What the total covers: the total application cost is the visa fee plus the service fee. The Chinese Visa Application Service Center collects the visa fee on behalf of the Chinese embassy, and the visa fee is tax-free; the center separately charges applicants a service fee.
- Visa fee tiers: the visa fee is normally tiered by number of entries and validity period, with the common tiers being single entry, double entry, multiple entry for six months, and multiple entry for one year or more. For example, in its September 2026 notice, the Chinese Embassy in Japan published separate visa fee standards for Japanese citizens covering single, double, six-month multiple and one-year multiple entry visas.
- Reciprocal arrangements by nationality: visa fees are set on the principle of reciprocity, so standards differ by nationality, and some countries have dedicated fee schedules. In the fee table published by the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, for example, standards for Tanzanian citizens differ from those for third-country nationals, while US, Canadian, Brazilian and other nationalities have their own corresponding standards.
- Expedited service charges: where expedited processing is available, some embassies and consulates charge an additional expedited fee on top of the visa fee; some nationalities cannot use expedited service at all. The Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, for instance, states that expedited service is not available to US citizens.
- Visa center service fee: the Chinese Visa Application Service Center charges a service fee, with standards published by each center. Applicants of other nationalities may pay amounts different from those listed, and the amount actually payable at the time of payment prevails.
- Temporary fee reductions: some embassies and consulates apply temporary reductions to visa fees. The fee reduction measures of the Chinese Embassy and consulates in Australia, for example, have been extended to December 31, 2026; such measures carry specific validity periods and scope of application.
- Rely on the official fee schedule: exchange rates, reciprocal arrangements and temporary policies all affect the final amount, so before applying, rely on the fee schedule published by the embassy, consulate or visa center that accepts your application.
How to apply: first, identify which embassy, consulate or visa center accepts your application; second, complete and submit the visa application form through China's online visa application system and print the confirmation page and form; third, submit the application in person at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center with your passport, photograph and other supporting documents, and pay the fees at the same time; fourth, collect your passport and visa on the date shown on the pickup slip.
Payment and documents: visa application service centers accept different payment methods, commonly cash, debit cards, credit cards or bank transfers, depending on the center. The visa fee is collected by the center on behalf of the embassy and is tax-free, while the service fee is charged by the center. Keep your payment receipts for verification.
Frequently asked questions: why do fees differ by nationality? Because visa fees are set under reciprocal arrangements and standards vary by country. Do temporary reductions apply to everyone? Reduction measures have specific validity periods and scope, so check each embassy's or consulate's announcement. Is expedited service always available? No, some nationalities or periods do not offer it. Whose figure is authoritative? The fee schedule published by the accepting embassy, consulate or visa center, and the amount actually charged, prevail.
The above is general guidance only. For specific requirements and the latest rules, please refer to official announcements.
